Opal Dykes' Obituary
Opal Doris Dykes, age 94, of Garland, Texas passed away peacefully on Saturday afternoon, January 20, 2018.Opal was born on October 1, 1923 to George Washington Patton and Leona Mae Peters Patton, in Era, Texas. She was raised with 4 brothers and 1 sister. Her family traveled and were farmers. Her father passed away in 1935. Her mother remarried to her step-father, Frank. When she was 17, she married Walter C. Dykes, Sr. (Dub) on May 31, 1941. They lived in Kaufman County for years and had 6 children. During this time, she was a seamstress and a mother. Later, they moved to Garland, Texas with their children: Judith Ann Dykes, Walter C. Dykes, Jr., James Bishop Dykes, Gary Wayne Dykes, Debra Lynn Dykes, and Steven Patton Dykes. They remained long- time residents on Rosewood Hills Drive. She later was employed by Varo, Inc. and had a long career as a semiconductor technician and helped create the military’s night vision program. She retired with Varo, Inc. and was knee-deep in 14 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.Opal lived a full and meaningful life. Religion was very important to her throughout her life and she attended Lakewood Baptist Church for many years, until her health declined. Even so, she read scriptures and held on to her faith until her death.She will always be our “Mom” and “Nanny.”The visitation will be Wednesday, January 24, 2018 from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. at Restland, Dallas.The funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 25, 2018 at 12:30 P.M. in the Wildwood Chapel.
