Patricia Smith's Obituary
SMITH, PATRICIA HENSLEY was born January 10, 1947, in Honolulu, Hawaii, to Lt. Col. Harry Simpson Hensley and La Vera Bynum Hensley. She went to be with the Lord on July 24, 2014, following a lengthy illness. Patty was a 1964 graduate of Saint Mary’s Hall in San Antonio, TX, and a 1967 graduate of Duke University in Durham, NC, where she was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. She had a long career in technical writing, communications and management with IBM, Texas Instruments, Compaq Computer, Convex Computer, and Benchmarq Microelectronics companies and was involved with the Kilby International Awards. Patty then worked as an Aflac insurance agent where she received several production awards. Patty was a member of Bentwood Trail Presbyterian Church, where she was an ordained elder and deacon and active in all areas of church life. Patty was a long-time volunteer and supervisor at North Dallas Shared Ministries. She was a member of National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, and was active in the Grapevine Wine Pouring Society and in her neighborhood association. Patty loved life and her friends, many of whom say she was like a sister to them. She lived in Germany and several states as a “military brat” and loved to travel. Patty was an ardent sports fan, especially of Duke basketball. She was a “foodie”, loved to entertain, and was part of her neighborhood gourmet dinner group. Patty was preceded in death by her husband, Presley Edward Smith, Jr. Survivors left to cherish her memory are her son, Patrick Hensley Douglass and his girlfriend, Jesica Jonas of Dallas; sister and brother-in-law, Holly Hensley Ludlam and Lloyd Dwaine Ludlam of Lakeway; step-daughter and step-son-in-law, Krista Elise Smith and Jeffrey Loyd Marsh of Hutto; cousins, William Curtis Bynum and his wife, Carol Doose Bynum of Midland; Laura Tankersley and her partner, Suzanna Alley of Austin; Gabriel Glenn of San Marcos; Jacob Glenn and his wife, Tami Andel Glenn of Bryan; and Rufe Sinclair Bynum IV of Tucson, AZ; adoring Coton de Tulear, Rico; and many friends. A Celebration of Life service, followed by a reception, will be held on Saturday, August 9, at 4 PM, at Bentwood Trail Presbyterian Church, 6000 Bentwood Trail, Dallas TX 75252. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to North Dallas Shared Ministries (ndsm.org), 2875 Merrell Drive, Dallas TX 75229.
