Patsy Ruth Winslett's Obituary
Winslett, Patsy Ruth. Born Aug 9, 1928, in Enid, OK. Pat went to heaven on December 31, 2016, after a 13-year struggle with Alzheimer’s. Pat was married in July 1950, and had three sons. Pat was first and foremost a family person, though she was involved in many other activities. As Pat was in her teens, she was ‘Patsy Cherry”, the youngest member of The Cherry Sisters, a musical and singing group that was recognized for their “perfect three-part harmony” and was well known throughout the multi-state area, with tours and frequent radio broadcasts on KRLD and WRR radio in Dallas. Patsy sang and played the electric pedal steel guitar. As she was raising her three sons, Pat was a teacher in DISD for 17 years, at William Cabell and David G. Burnett elementary schools, primarily with 6th-grade language arts. She was also a substitute teacher in RISD from 2000-2002, at virtually every RISD elementary school. Pat was preceded in death by her father Haskille Scott Cherry; sisters Margaret Cherry Murphy and Clairol Freeman; her husband Thomas Donnell Winslett; her son Thomas Donnell Winslett II; and her favorite puppies, Dinky and Diva. She is survived by sons Stephen Scott, his wife Maggie, Patrick Michael, his wife Barbara, daughter in law Carolyn, and 7 grandchildren; Laurel, Victoria, Katie, Brad, Scott, Allison, and Stephanie. Pat continually attended to her husband as he battled heart disease for over 10 years. After his passing in 1978, Pat rejoined the Park Cities Baptist Church community and was active in church and the choir for 20+ years. Pat loved to travel with her church friends, venturing to Hawaii, Alaska, Canada, Scandinavia, and Russia. She also loved the family trips she led to Disney World multiple times, NYC, Las Vegas, Washington D.C. and Virginia, as well as Europe, Egypt and Greece. When Pat wasn’t traveling or singing, she spent several summers taking care of 4 grandchildren in their younger years, creating numerous memorable experiences, including trips for the 4 of them to the circus, the Science Place, lunches at the top of Reunion Tower, etc. Pat was also active in the Dallas Theater Guild, serving as president for the 1992-1993 season, and was involved with Minter Club for several years. During the mid-80’s Pat was a volunteer at the Dallas Museum of Art, conducting countless tours for over 6 years, and was featured in the Dallas Morning News in 1989. Pat’s ‘collectibles’ came from her love of penguins, and her collection was once displayed at the PCBC library. Pat was a breast cancer survivor, having successfully battled that disease in 1985. Pat was also a fighter when it came to Alzheimer’s. She was initially placed on ‘hospice’ over 5 years ago, and then again in July 2015. The family wants to especially thank Jane Kovacs at Friend’s Place, and Alice Gough at Arden Courts for their invaluable and genuine support and guidance over the past several years. Visitation will be on Tuesday, Jan 3, 6-8 pm. Memorial and gravesite services will be at Restland Funeral home, Wildwood Chapel on Wednesday, January 4, at 12:30.
