Paul Mabrey Hanson's Obituary
HANSON, PAUL M. Paul Mabrey Hanson passed away on Monday, March 12, 2007, surrounded by his family. He was born October 24, 1922, on a farm in Saline County, Kansas. At the age of two, he and his family moved to Junction City, Kansas, where he resided until graduating from high school in 1941. After high school, he attended Kansas Wesleyan University for one semester before enlisting in the Marine Corps. While serving in the Marine Corps he was involved in the invasions of Bouganville, Guam, and Okinawa. While on Okinawa he received a commendation from Lemuel Shepherd, Jr., Major General, USMC, for “meritorious service and outstanding performance of duty during operations against the enemy on Okinawa from April 1, 1945, to June 1, 1945.” After discharge from the Marine Corps, he visited a sister in Dallas before returning to Kansas, and since SMU had a year-round program going at the time, he enrolled in SMU and received a BBA degree in 1948. He also earned varsity letters in baseball during 1946 and 1947, and he was always proud to say Doak Walker was a teammate. After graduating from SMU in 1948, he was employed by Oilwell Supply Division of U.S. Steel Corporation for seventeen years. He left that firm in 1964 to join Ebby Halliday, REALTORS, and was active with that firm for the next 40 years. He was active in civic and real estate circles, serving four years as vice-president of the North Dallas Chamber of Commerce as well as numerous committees. In honor of his contributions to the NDCC, they named the “Paul Hanson Award,” which is presented annually to the most active volunteer for that particular year. In 1973, he served as president of RELO, a national relocation organization based in Chicago, which today is one of the largest networks of independent brokers with 700 firms as members. He is a past director of both the Texas Association of REALTORS and the Greater Dallas Association of REALTORS. During his real estate career, he was a member of eleven boards or associations of REALTORS in the metroplex and also a member of the National Association of REALTORS, the Texas Association of REALTORS, REALTORS National Marketing Institute, and was active on various committees in those organizations. He served several years as Business Director and Treasurer for the Texas Independent College Fund, headquartered in Fort Worth. This organization raises funds for over 30 independent colleges and universities located in Texas. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, two sisters, Virginia Huff and Frances Pedersen, and a brother, Raymond. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 44 years and mother of his children, Frances Crews Hanson, and by his second wife of six years, Mildred Kershner Hanson. He is survived by his three daughters, Joan Patmore, Gwen Sanchez and husband Roberto, and Kaye Galloway; seven grandchildren, Rob Sanchez and wife Ellie, Alexis Martinez and husband Antonio, Laura Sanchez, Chuck Patmore, Paul Patmore, Doug Patmore, and Lindsey Galloway; two great-grandchildren, Nicolas Sanchez and Carolina Martinez; his sister, Ebby Halliday Acers; nephew, Jim Huff; and niece Jensy Engle. Visitation is from 6:30-8:30pm on Thursday, March 15, 2007, at Restland Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at 1:00pm on Friday, March 16, 2007, at Central Christian Church in Dallas. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Central Christian Church, 4711 Westside Drive, Dallas, Texas 75209.
