Paul Lee Sine's Obituary
Paul Lee Sine was born in the rural southeast Kansas mining town of Scammon on June 14, 1922 to Berle Eugene Sine and Maude O’Malley. He passed away on November 24, 2014 at the age of 92. His younger days were spent in Scammon. He graduated from Columbus High School in 1940 and later was employed by Reno Construction Company. In 1941, at the age of 19, he answered his Country’s call and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. After the war, Paul moved to Kansas City where he met Margaret Jane Lyons also of Scammon, and they were married on August 9, 1947 in Kansas City, Kansas. His brother, Floyd, employed Paul in the furniture business in Kansas City until 1961 when he took a position with Owens Corning Fiberglas. Paul accepted a transfer to Dallas in August 1963 and moved his growing family to Texas. He retired from Owens Corning in 1988. Paul was a founding member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Richardson, Texas serving as Eucharistic Minister and volunteering in other capacities for the Knights of Columbus, in which he was a member of the 4th Degree, and also the St. Joseph Men’s Club. He was named “Person of the Year” for the Greater Dallas Area Knights of Columbus in 1990, and he received the Good Samaritans Award for Volunteer Services from the City of Garland in 2007. Paul started out his Marine Corps duty at Camp Eliott in San Diego, the predecessor for Camp Pendleton. This was the first time Paul had been out of southeast Kansas. He was detailed to the 3rd Battalion 10th Regiment of the 2nd Division. His unit was assigned to the 1st Marine Division and departed for the South Pacific in July 1942. Paul was a member of I Battery known for firing the first offensive shots for the United States in World War II with the invasion of Tulagi prior to the Guadalcanal invasion. Paul subsequently saw action at Tarawa, the Marianas Islands, and Iwo Jima. He received an Honorable Discharge in February of 1946 and finally returned home to Scammon and his family. An avid sports fan, Paul umpired for Little League Baseball in Kansas City before moving to Texas. He later enjoyed watching his three boys, and several years later, his three grandchildren play football, basketball, volleyball, soccer, and golf. Paul was a dedicated Dallas Cowboys fan, a devoted Kansas Jayhawk Basketball fan, a Fighting Irish fan, a diehard Texas Rangers Baseball fan, and he enjoyed keeping tabs on the local high school teams where his sons and grandchildren had attended. Working in his workshop was a hobby Paul greatly enjoyed, and he made many items for the church craft fair each year. He could also be found playing cards three to four times a week with his good friends at the American Legion post. Paul is survived by two of his sons: Paul Edward Sine of Garland, Texas and Floyd Timothy and his wife, Cynthia, Sine of Coppell, Texas. He was immensely blessed with three Grandchildren: Erin Margaret Sine of Plano, Texas; Sarah Jayne (Sine) Carrera and her husband, Duwayne, of McKinney, Texas; and Matthew Timothy Sine, and his wife, Dr. Christen Massey, of The Woodlands, Texas. Paul also received great joy from his three Great-Grandchildren: Trey Cason Carrera, Mia Jayne Carrera, and Parker Timothy Sine. His sister Margaret Jane Langerot of Columbus, Kansas, also survives Paul. His large extended family includes many wonderful cousins, nieces, and nephews who now live all across the country. Beloved family members who preceded Paul in death were his wife of 43 years, Margaret Jane Sine in 1990; his youngest son, Mark Gerard in 2010; his sister, Mary Lucille; and three of his best friends who just happened to be his brothers: William Harold, Floyd Joseph, and Robert James.
