I first met Pete as a 13 year-old girl. He would have been 20. He came to Grosse Ile to meet my mom, dad and me after meeting and dating my sister, Jeanette, at Michigan State. It was the beginning of our relationship that lasted many decades. Pete became not only my brother-in-law but my "big brother". There is nothing I can add to his accolades that I'm sure his friends and loved ones are sharing with one another over the next two days. I always enjoyed that twinkle in his eye when he delighted in something or someone. I know of no man who loved or was prouder of his three children who grew up to be the best of his attributes, Steve, Bob and Kim. For those of us who can't be there at this time, trust me when I say, no one cherished or loved him more. Rest in peace, big brother. I love you.
Peter was born on January 15, 1941, the only child to Rudolph and Gisela Piekenbrock. As a young boy growing up in Germany, Peter witnessed and shared his vivid memories of World War II. His most colorful memories revolved around the sudden and loud air sirens blasting the airwaves as the community scrambled to gather a small number of belongings and loved ones to gather in the designated bomb shelters as the allied pilots were rapidly approaching the town on another targeted run. Peter said that after they had emerged from the shelter one day, they had found that their home had sustained damage during the bombing and the family was forced to take the extraordinary measures by sheltering in their chicken coupe for an extended period time. After the war, Peter and his mother Gisela (holding dual citizenship in Germany and the United States), boarded a US Military ship and made the journey back to the United States. Peter?s father, Rudolph, stayed behind in Germany for a short period of time and the family was reunited and took up residence in New Jersey. Rudolph Piekenbrock, by trade, was a mechanical engineer. In order to continue to provide for his family, Rudolph made the decision to relocate the family to the town of Ponce, Puerto Rico for work. Peter spent his most formative high school years in Ponce. Whenever Peter talked about his friends and experiences in Puerto Rico, it became immediately clear to the listener how truly special this time and how impactful these lifelong relationships were to Peter. Peter often spoke of one of his favorite dishes, Arroz con Pollo. Peter also recalled how he was forced into action one day to save the life of a drowning man. Given that Peter had spent years participating in and developing a skill set through the various Scouting programs (almost achieving the highest rank of Eagle Scout), he was able to fully utilize those skills and prevent a tragedy. Peter also demonstrated his athleticism and played on the high school varsity basketball team. Peter was an exceptional student and was accepted into the Chemical Engineering program at Michigan State University. Peter often recalled how difficult this program was as evidenced by the high dropout rate during his time there. Here, Peter also came to the aid of a young boy who severed his artery in his arm playing basketball. Upon graduation from Michigan State, Peter was hired by Diamond Shamrock and his emerging family took up residence in Painesville, Ohio. Peter became on of the youngest Plant Managers in Diamond Shamrock?s history. Peter then relocated his family to Garland, Texas where he continued his career with Diamond Shamrock and Occidental Chemical Corporation. Professionally, Peter was a problem solver and a leader. Peter was a fierce advocate for his teams and his employers. During company picnics, it was clear that Peter was both respected and approachable at all levels within the organization (he was also a pretty good softball player). During his tenure at Diamond Shamrock, and subsequently OxyChem, Peter forged many great business and personal relationships. Many of these relationships transcended the workplace and grew into lifelong friendships that continued throughout his retirement. While no one person can fully or effectively summarize the footprint that Peter Piekenbrock left on the world, here are a few final thoughts. Peter took on many roles during his life?he was a son, he was a father and grandfather, he was a husband, he was a friend, he was a boss, he was an employee, he was a neighbor, and to others he was a guardian angel. With each role he took on, there is a litany of positive impact points that changed the course of people?s lives. Peter Piekenbrock, the Lord our God has now called for you to join Him with the blessing of life everlasting. We will miss you (and your deep booming voice) dearly and we give Thanks to our Creator, for your time on earth.
