Peter Yeuk-Lam Wong's Obituary
Peter Yeuk-Lam Wong passed peacefully on August 23, 2019 from a stroke due to a ruptured aneurysm several days earlier. Peter was born in Ngchow (Wuzhou) Guangxi Province in southern China, he was the youngest of fourteen kids (7 girls and 7 boys). His grandfather was a five-star general in the Chinese Army during the Ch’ing dynasty and fought in the Opium Wars. His father was the Mayor of Ngchow but he lost him at the tender age of 7. As Communist rule began to take hold, he had to flee from his home and leave his mother. Struggling, he reunited with siblings in Hong Kong to start over. In Hong Kong, he would meet his future wife, Monica, in community college and married in 1965. To give their children more opportunities and a better life, they immigrated to the United States and successfully settled in Dallas, Texas in 1970 to pursue the American Dream. After initially persevering through hardships, in 1974, Peter and several of his siblings opened the South China Restaurant on East Mockingbird Lane, across from the Dr Pepper plant. Early on Peter seized on an opportunity. He traveled to Toronto, Canada and worked as an apprentice with master chefs in Chinatown to acquire the skills to make Dim Sum. Eventually he brought these skills back to their restaurant in Dallas and introduced Dim Sum to North Texas. It was an immediate success with lines out the door. Through this success, he would forever be known by all in the Chinese Community as “Chut-Suk” (Uncle 7), which is what his many nieces and nephews called him. Later, he opened his own restaurants in Oak Cliff, Fort Worth and Garland. Working on average 12-hour days, Peter became a successful restaurateur and retired after 27 years in the business. In retirement, he enjoyed spending time with the grandchildren, traveling, visiting relatives, going on cruises and the occasional (or frequent) casino excursions. He was a loving father, husband, grandfather, brother, and uncle. He cared for everyone and everyone loved him back.Peter is survived by his wife Monica; children Christopher, Mona & Philip; grandchildren Amanda, Melanie, Christina, Matthew, Riley, Victoria, Ryan & Liam; brother Yok Kai Wong.Funeral service for Mr. Peter Wong will be on Sunday, September 1, 2019 at 2:30 PM in the Memorial Chapel at Restland Funeral Home.
