I first met Phil when he was a medical student at the University of West Virginia in Morgantown, and I was a surgery resident. We met again when he was a resident at Baylor University Medical Hospital in 1971. After he joined Felix Peppard's practice we were on the same service. It was the golden age of General Surgery under Robert Sparkman. When liver transplantation was developed, Phil and I along with 10 other general surgeons volunteered to assist Dr. Klintmalm. Phil and I had a long professional and personal relationship. I am saddened by his death. Jay Hoppenstein, MD
