Philip R. Morrow MD's Obituary
Philip R Morrow, MD of Dallas passed away on October 16, 2014 surrounded by his wife, Elizabeth and his loving family. Philip was born January 28, 1929, the third child and only son of Costa D. and Gladys M. Morrow in Sherman, Texas. Philip was raised under the loving influence of his mother and father and his two older sisters, Mary Alice M. Stephens and Louise M. Lang. He graduated from Sherman High School in 1946 where he served as class president, was elected most handsome and was later designated as a distinguished alumnus. He then attended Austin College, graduating in 1950. While at AC, Philip embraced student life as a founding member and President of The Drakes social fraternity. After graduating from AC Philip began the pursuit of his chosen profession by attending medical school at UT Southwestern in Dallas. Following graduation from UTSW in 1954 he then served proudly in the US Army as Captain in the Army Medical Corp and was stationed at Ft Carson, Colorado. Upon his discharge from the service, Philip returned to Dallas to begin his residency in general surgery. Upon completion of his residency Philip began a distinguished 45 year career in surgery and shared a 35 year surgery partnership with his great friend, the late Kenneth O. Adwan, MD. He was an active member and former president of the Dallas County Surgical Society. He was active in many other professional organizations including being a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the Texas Surgical Society. Philip especially enjoyed his long service as a clinical instructor of surgery at UTSW where he worked with and taught young, aspiring surgeons. He was universally loved and admired by his colleagues in the medical profession and his hundreds of patients. While attending UT Southwestern, Philip met the love of his life, Elizabeth, on a blind date. They were married in Dallas in 1952 and remained deeply in love and devoted to each other for the next 62 years. They shared an intense interest in sports, especially supporting the SMU Mustang football and basketball programs. They also participated in and passionately pursued their love of tennis. Philip and Elizabeth were blessed with four children all of whom quickly figured out that they had very special parents. Philip and Elizabeth raised their children in an atmosphere where love and respect for all persons was a huge priority. Philip’s life example was one of quiet and committed selfless service, treating everyone with dignity and respect. He was a true gentleman in every sense of the word. Philip was known for his keen sense of humor as well as his sincerity. Philip was an active and loyal member of Highland Park United Methodist Church for over 60 years where he served on many boards and committees, including as Chairman of the Administrative Board. Philip and Elizabeth were members of the Roundtable Class at HPUMC for over 50 years where they built many lifelong friendships. His deep Christian faith was evident to all who knew him as he was truly a humble and devoted follower of Jesus Christ. Philip is predeceased by his mother and father and his sister Louise M Lang, and her husband, Garland H Lang, Jr., MD, his sister-in-law, Helen S. Willbanks and husband Otto L. Willbanks, MD, his brother-in-law Wm. O. Stephens, his son-in-law, Bob Britten and three grandsons Philip, Patrick and Ben Britten. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, his sister Mary Alice Stephens, his children Helen (Jeff) Smith of Amarillo, Mary (John) Peisen of Rockwall, Paul (Laura Nell) Morrow and John (Julie) Morrow, all of Dallas. Also surviving him are grandchildren Jeffery Smith, Andy Smith, Matthew Peisen, Katie Peisen, Austin Morrow, Emily Morrow, Mack Morrow, P. Raymond Morrow, II, Ellen Morrow, and Stanton Morrow. He is also survived by great grandchildren Graham Smith, Eloise Smith, Rosalie Smith and Jay Britten Morrow as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews. Philip’s family expresses their gratitude to Sharon Meyers and the other wonderful caregivers from Bluebonnet that took care of Philip in his last days. The family will receive friends on Monday, October 20, 2014, from 6 to 8 pm at Restland Funeral Home, 13005 Greenville Avenue, Dallas, TX 75243. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, October 21, 2014 at Highland Park United Methodist Church Sanctuary at 1:30 pm, 3300 Mockingbird Lane. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Restland Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 13005 Greenville Avenue, at Restland Road, Dallas, TX 75238 Memorials may be made in Philip’s memory to Highland Park United Methodist Church’s Haiti Eye Clinic, The Southwestern Medical Foundation or a charity of your choice.
