Phyllis Everett Downtain's Obituary
Born in Ft. Worth, Texas, Phyllis graduated from Paschal High School before moving to Austin and later relocating to Dallas. After finding herself a single mother to two young sons, she began a career in real estate, founding Phyllis Everett Realtors and serving several terms on the Dallas Board of Realtors. Though a very successful and pioneering businesswoman, her sons, Scott and Mike Everett, were always the light of her life and her greatest inspiration.
She and Tom Downtain met in grade school, and rekindled their young love, marrying on June 3, 1988. Theirs was a true love story and they enjoyed 37 years together playing golf, skiing, singing, and traveling, preferring to be at each other’s side until her death. Their blended family was a great source of joy and support for Phyllis. They are members of First Baptist church in Allen and loved singing old hymns together. Some of Phyllis’ favorite hymns were selected for her memorial service.
Phyllis was raised in a very tight-knit Texas family and was preceded in death by her grandparents, parents, Mary and Hugh Cawley, dear Uncle Benny (Wilkes) and many other loving extended family members. Playing poker, singing, and telling jokes meant that family get togethers were always full of laughter. At 88, she was the matriarch of the Texas clan, but for those who loved her, 88 years were not enough.
In addition to her sons, her survivors include her beloved Tom, the Downtain clan, her sister Chlois Barkman of Charlotte, North Carolina, and her nieces, Tricia Green, also of Charlotte and Phyllis Ferrell of Lebanon, Indiana, and their families.
