Phyllis Del Guzzi Read's Obituary
Phyllis Del Guzzo Read of Dallas, TX went to be with the Lord on February 16th, 2015 at the age of 87, joining her recently departed husband of nearly 58 years, George. Born May 24th, 1927 in Bellaire, Ohio, Phyllis was the eldest of four children. She grew up in the Depression era and lost her mother when she was just nine years old. Her father, Ettor Del Guzzo, came to the US through Ellis Island from Abruzzi, Italy and while in New York met and married Antoinette Buttitta whose family had immigrated to the Bronx from Sicily. Phyllis grew up in Bellaire across the street from St. John’s Catholic Church where her many aunts and uncles helped her father raise the children and run the family business of assisting other recent immigrants to the U.S. As a young woman after WWII, she worked in various firms, traveled, attended Marietta College, and graduated from The Ohio State University. Soon thereafter, she let George talk her into getting married and moving to Texas. Phyllis carried an independent spirit throughout her life, supporting her husband in running their own business for over 40 years. Always good for a laugh and a dear friend to many, Phyllis was active throughout her life in various social, community and church-related groups. In addition to supporting her husband’s charitable pursuits, such as the Lakewood Music Program, Phyllis was always kind to her hometown church and schools. Never afraid to start another quilting project, she loved her arts and crafts, and enjoyed sharing that passion with all her quilting friends across the country. A devoted wife, mother and grandmother, Phyllis passed on her independent spirit and love of life to her daughter Kimberly Moody and son-in-law Jimmy Moody, son Thomas L. Read II and Alise Robinson, and grandchildren Robert, Amy and Autum. Memorial services will be held February 21st at 11am at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 9643 Ferndale Road, Dallas, Texas 75238. The services will be followed by a reception and celebration of her life at the family home.
