Rex Lynn Day's Obituary
It is with deep sadness that the family of Rex Lynn Day announces his passing on Thursday, December 18th, 2025. With family gathered around him, and his favorite Western Swing and Country music playing in the background, Rex went to Heaven to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Rex is survived by his children, Laura “Lynn” Boulton and her husband Tony, Ross Day, and Daniel Ted Day and his wife Stephanie, his grandchildren, Amanda Conway and her husband Tyler, Sam Day and his wife Courtney, Josie Day, Millie Meyer and her husband Andrew, Claire Day, Ginny Honescko and her husband Joey, and Willis Rex Day, and great-grandchildren, Jensen Endicott, Peggy Sue Conway, Luella Marie Honesco, Madeleine Kelly Day and Joseph Adam Honescko. The family also acknowledge a special friend and caregiver LeAnn Tanner and her husband Bob.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Jill, his brothers Doyle and Dale and his wife of 54 years, Rita Love Day.
Rex was born September 10th, 1931, in Vivian, Louisianna to Charlie Ross Day and Susan Elisabeth Day. He was the youngest of his siblings by several years. Home was a small farmstead, in a rural community between Shreveport and Texarkana. Life was tough, and especially so since Rex’s father died when he was very young. He grew up picking cotton and helping his mother Susan however he could, especially when his brothers went off to WW2. The family eventually moved to Texas and there he finished school, graduating from Irving High School in 1948, having settled in Irving.
In 1963, he met Rita Love Day, at a dance where he was playing in the band when he noticed his “sweetheart” from the first moment that she entered the room. They married on December 18th, 1965 and made their home in Dallas, Texas. The family grew to include seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Grandaddy Rex was extremely proud of all of them.
Rex started his career with Dallas Power & Light as a meter reader, and worked hard to advance up eventually to sales management, before retiring in 1987 at the age of 55. Rex had a real passion for music – both Country music and Western Swing and earned extra
money as a radio DJ with KSKY. He later managed to find enough time, on weekends and days off, to become a well-regarded drummer and band leader. His music career spanned over half a century, playing for such famous names as Bob Wills, Roy Acuff, Willie Nelson and Ray Price, amongst many more. He was a member of the Nebraska Country Music Hall of Fame and in 2018 received the Cowtown Society of Western Music – Western Swing Living Legend Award.
Join us for a "Celebration of Life" for Rex to be held at Restland Funeral Home, 13005 Greenville Ave, Dallas, TX 75243, at 2pm on Monday, January 5th, 2026.
