Richard "Dick" Bove''s Obituary
It was on Mother’s Day 1929 that Dick Bove’ came into this world. Born in Westchester County, New York, he spent most of his life in suburban Tuckahoe, New York where he attended grade school and later went on to Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx and Seton Hall University in South Orange, New Jersey where be majored in Communications with a minor in Philosophy. Following graduation in January 1951, Bove’ hosted a program on WNJR, Newark for a brief period before being called by Uncle Sam to serve in the Army. He completed basic training at Fort Dix, New Jersey and completed courses in Leadership and PlO schools and then reported to Camp Stoneman, California for assignment overseas. Upon arrival at Camp Drake Japan, Bove’ received his orders and was designated for service with the 1st Loudspeaker and Leaflet Company, EUSAK. It was with the 1st L and L that he worked with Chinese and Korean interpreters in producing oral and musical programs geared to entice enemy troops to defect to United Nations forces. The 1st Loudspeaker and Leaflet Company was the first of its kind to serve in combat. Bove’ served in Korea from January 1952 to March 1953. After being discharged from the Army, he took a six month sabbatical before resuming his career in broadcasting. His initial job was in Jacksonville, NC, home of Camp Lejeune. From there he worked his way to radio stations in Western Pennsylvania and New York State as a disc jockey until, in 1959 he made the move to Dallas where he got his first job as a salesman with WFAA Radio. He spent 11 years with the station and in 1970 he was asked to serve as Station Manager with KIXL AM/FM; his first management position. Other high Ievel jobs followed in radio until he switched to television in 1975 as General Sales Manager of KXTX-TV. Bove’ served in that capacity for several years and was later named Vice president and General Manager before retiring for a short time in 1987. He helped build KFWD, Channel 52, Telemundo, for a Hispanic group and managed the station for a year before retiring from a career that spanned 36 years. During his retirement years, Bove’ was active in church activities, the Knights of Columbus, the Korean War Veterans Association, and volunteering at the VA Hospital. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Sylvia Bove’; and two very devoted daughters, Karen Bove’ and Aimee Bove’ Herron; many other extended family members and dear friends. A memorial service is planned for 11:00 am, Friday, December 30, 2016 at All Saints Catholic Church located at 5231 Meadowcreek Drive, Dallas, TX 75248. All are invited to attend.
