Richard Frank Mauro's Obituary
Richard (Dick) Mauro was born on July 21, 1945 in Hawthorne, Nevada to Dolores and Frank Mauro. He graduated from Denver North High School in 1963. In 1965, he married his high school sweetheart LaVonne (Vonnie) while attending Brown University where he played rugby and was a Francis Wayland Scholar. He graduated from Brown in 1967, the first in his family to hold a college degree. In the fall of 1967, he entered the University of Denver College of Law where he became a member of the Law Review, the Order of St. Ives and graduated summa cum laude in 1970. In 1992, Dick left the practice of law to become involved in the business management of gold funds. He and partner, Chris Thompson, formed Castle Group, Inc. where they worked with the IFC, a subsidiary of the World Bank. Dick traveled extensively, primarily to Western Africa and Ghana, in particular. In 2001, Dick returned to the practice of law joining the firm of Moye, Giles, et al. and retired in 2003 due to failing health. In 2014, he and Vonnie moved to Dallas, Texas to be near his only child, daughter Lindsay, and her family and he died there on May 22, 2017 surrounded by loved ones. Dick was an avid bicyclist and runner and completed a marathon in 1982. He was president of the Colorado Open Space Council, served on the Board of Directors of the Denver Athletic Club and numerous mining companies and was also an adjunct Professor at the University of Denver College of Law. He is survived by his wife Vonnie, daughter Lindsay, son-in-law Dennis Wakabayashi, grandson Tucker and granddaughter Lucy, all of Dallas. He is also survived by a step-granddaughter Asia, of Lakewood and four brothers, Mark, Joe, Roger and Patrick. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the National Parkinson’s Foundation or a hospice facility of your choice. A celebration of life will be held on Friday, June 23, 2017 at 3:00 pm at the University of Denver Fritz Knoebel School of Hospitality, 2044 E. Evans Ave. Denver, CO 80210. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Restland Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 13005 Greenville Avenue, Dallas, TX 75243.
