Richard Hewlett Greenoe's Obituary
Richard passed away peacefully on Friday August 3, 2018. Born July 22, 1934 in New Albany, Mississippi to Leighton and Carolyn Greenoe, the third of four sons, Richard Greenoe is preceded in death by his parents and three brothers. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, JoAnn, his two daughters, Sherry and Amanda Beth, his son-in-law, George Jones, and his three granddaughters, Alexa Wells Coldewey and Kevin Coldewey, Ashleigh Wells and Allie Wells.An honorable and Godly man, Richard loved his family and cherished every moment with them. He was kind to all – the most self-less person in the world – caring more about the wellbeing of others than for himself. Always happy, he loved to laugh -his laughter was infectious and he enjoyed putting a smile on the face of anyone he met.Richard attended West Tallahatchie High School then moved to Tupelo High School where at both he achieved state honors in band and football, performing with the band during halftime in his football uniform.He then attended Mississippi College where he played football and graduated with a degree in Accounting.He spent several summers working at Yellowstone National Park and had the best ever bear stories.He got his first job at Western Union Telegraph and joined the US Marine Corps Reserves where he served for 13 years. He and JoAnn then moved to Dallas when he was given the opportunity to work in the Accounting Department for Hunt Oil Company where he worked for 35 years. He donated both time and money to the United Way by tutoring students at a local school.Richard loved sports and never missed an opportunity to watch the Cowboys, Rangers, Stars, Mavericks, Ole Miss Rebels and Texas Longhorns (Patriots and Detroit too plus just about any other team who was playing when those teams were not).While working full time as well as after retirement, he officiated football in the fall and umpired softball in the spring and summer. He also enjoyed many years of working at the State Fair of Texas utilizing his skills in accounting.Richard was an avid model train enthusiast, a member of The Dallas Train Club and spent his free time building his own engines, box cars, scenery and the track on which they ran.Richard put the Lord first in all aspects of his life. Having joined Shiloh Terrace Baptist Church in 1968 and remaining a member throughout his life, Richard served God through many activities at the church. He served as a deacon for many years and enjoyed singing with the POPS choir.He loved reading military/spy novels, westerns and mysteries and always be enjoyed playing Clue or Pollyanna with his granddaughters. Occasionally he would allow them to win a game or two.As the best husband, dad, grandfather and human being anyone could know, he will very much be missed.A Graveside service will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday August 8, 2018 at Restland Cemetery. Memorial Service will follow at 2:00 pm at Shiloh Terrace Baptist Church in Dallas.
