Our family moved to Dallas in 1955. I was five and my sister, Elaine was one year of age. It was a new subdivision and neighbors were busy with settling in their families, landscaping their yards, and embarking on their new futures. Most were young families, including our next door neighbors, the Mongaras family. I recall Rita from about the time when she was first taking steps and my sister was just becoming mobile as well.
I have never witnessed the degree and strength of the bond and friendship that developed between Rita and Elaine, ever. They were inseparable, and this developed from day one. They were sisters in every sense of the word, the only exception being ancestry. They literally grew up together, and Rita was family to us, and Elaine likewise to to our caring, good neighbors next door.
Rita was kind, intelligent, great humored, and one of the few completely positive good souls I have ever had the privilege of knowing. I knew her through her formative years as she and Elaine developed into young women. It would be greatly understated to simply say Rita had a profound impact and role in who my sister became. Her exemplary influence remains visible and treasured to this day.
My final encounter with Rita was when she and brother Stanley came to St. Louis for Elaine's wedding.
I hope we may all meet again some day.
