Robert Louis "Bob" Howell's Obituary
Robert Louis (Bob) Howell passed away at the age of 95 on December 15th, 2010 at home surrounded by his loving family. He was born February 20, 1915 in Dawson, Texas the 10th child of Reverend Zebbie Lee Howell, Sr. and Laura Middleton Howell. Bob was preceded in death by his parents and nine siblings; Winnie Bell, Zebbie Lee, Jr., Nona Mae Moser, Fannie Edna Bradford, Mary Ruth Edwards, Nettie Laura Wooten, Tabbie Lynn McNatt, Reverend William English Howell, Lois Mauritsa Howell and several nieces and nephews. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Elizabeth Davis Howell, daughter, Ann Smith and husband Reverend Doctor Bart Smith; granddaughter, Amy Lynn Doar and husband Jeff Doar; great grandson, Robert Barton Doar, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Bob was Valedictorian of the 1932 graduating class of Carbon High School, Carbon Texas. He received his degree in Civil Engineering from Southern Methodist University in 1938 and began his 47 year career with Sun Oil Company as a Civil Engineer, starting as a co-op student while at SMU. He worked in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Colorado before retiring in the mid 80’s at the age of 70. Bob was a proud Eagle Scout, an SMU Golden Mustang, a member of the Texas Society of Professional Civil Engineers, Texas Surveyors Association (NE Texas Chapter 23) and an early member of Toast Masters of Dallas. He was an avid golfer and active for many years in the Sunoco Bowling League. Bob was a loyal and loving family man, a trusted friend and a man of integrity and honor. He will be missed by all who knew him. Memorial Services will be held at Christ United Methodist Church of Plano Monday, December 20th, at 11 am, officiated by Reverend Doctor Justin W. Tull and Reverend Doctor Bart Smith. There will be a Family Visitation at Restland Funeral Home on Sunday, December 19th, 2010 from 6 pm to 8 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to the SMU School of Engineering or House On The Corner Project of Christ United Methodist Church of Plano, 3101 Coit Road, Plano Texas 75075. The family expresses deep appreciation for all his caregivers during these past years: Patresia Mfanu, Johanna Mabela, Helga Mayfield, Shirley Cooks, Charlotte Sifford, Evelyn Dixon and the staff at Reachout Home Care and Faith Presbyterian Hospice.
