Robert Lee (Bob) Jensen's Obituary
Robert Lee (Bob) Jensen was born October 18, 1928 to J.S. and Alice Christensen Jensen. Growing up on the family farm he attended a one room schoolhouse, graduated valedictorian from Manilla High School in Manilla, Iowa, and then the University of Iowa with a degree in Accounting. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force where he served in Korea and Japan, obtaining a tremendous amount of experience in his chosen field of accounting. After serving in the Air Force, Bob came to Dallas seeking employment and was hired by the Great A&P Tea Company. Two and a half years later he joined the Dallas Times Herald as a staff accountant. He worked his way through several positions within the organization during 19 years with the company; serving as the President and CEO of the Dallas Times Herald and KDFW TV for the last years of his tenure. Bob declined a move to the west coast following the acquisition of the Dallas Times Herald by the Times Mirror Corporation, and the separation of the television entity. The following year he and a group of investors purchased Newspaper Enterprises Incorporated, a printing company of newspaper advertisements and inserts. He sold the company February 28th, 1994, and retired. He maintained an office and oversaw various holdings for another 10 years before working at home. Active in his community, Bob was a 33rd degree Mason and spent many years as a trustee for Texas Scottish Rite Hospital in Dallas. He served for many years on the board of the Metro YMCA, was a director of the Dallas Foundation, and served on the United Way Board. He was an active alumnus of the University of Iowa, often contributing to the School of Business. Bob’s favorite activities included travel, golf, and fishing. He enjoyed more than 20 cruises. He circled the globe on the Concorde for his 70th birthday, making 8 stops in various locations, including his birthday celebration in Beijing, China. He had the opportunity to play many top level golf courses around the world, honing his game at Northwood Club where he was a member for more than half a century. Bob is survived by his brothers, James Jensen of Bullhead City, Arizona, and Alan Jensen and his wife, Janet of Manilla, Iowa; daughters, Gayle Jensen- Savoie, Melinda Kincaid and husband, Howard, grand-daughter, Lee Ann Kincaid; grandsons, Caine Savoie and Will Savoie, as well as several nieces, their husbands and children. A memorial service for Bob will be at 1:00 PM on Sunday, April 26, 2015 in The Wildwood Chapel at Restland Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children 2222 Wellborn Street, Dallas, Texas 75219 or to The Educational Institution of your choice.
