Robert Ernest Dixon's Obituary
“I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do.”– John 17:4The Rev’d Dr. Robert Ernest Dixon, devoted husband, beloved father and grandfather, trusted friend, and faithful servant of Jesus Christ, entered into the glorious presence of the Father on May 10th, 2018.He was born on March 6th, 1928, to William Carl and Mary Josephine Dixon in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He was born again into the Father’s family at the age of eleven at a city-wide tent evangelistic service under the preaching of Hyman Appleman. He married his childhood sweetheart, Jean Carol Barger, on October 23rd, 1948.Bob retired as the Executive Director of Texas Baptist Men. He previously served as the Director of Royal Ambassadors for Texas Baptists. In addition to his ministry in the wider church, he served at College Avenue Baptist Church in Fort Worth, Calvary Baptist in Jackson, Mississippi, and the First Baptist Churches of Nashville and Memphis, Tennessee. In each local church, he was a pioneer in recreation ministry.He was a World War II Navy Veteran and played professional baseball in the farm system of the Washington Senators. He attended Mississippi College, Edmondson Business College, and Southwestern Seminary.In 1999, he received the Pioneer Award from the Texas Baptist Missions Foundation for his pioneering work in founding Disaster Relief in the wake of Hurricane Beulah in 1967. His efforts led Texas Baptists in building the first Disaster Relief Unit in the SBC. There are now over one hundred units across the United States that have touched countless lives for Christ in the wake of disasters.He received a Doctor of Humanities from Howard Payne University, and was named a Distinguished Alumnus of Southwestern Seminary. In his retirement, TBM honored him with the Paraboloni Award and named the current Mission Equipping Center in his honor. He was also the recipient of the Texas Baptist Legacy Award and the first Texas Baptist Men Fifty-Year Service Award. In spite of the praise of men, he walked humbly with the Lord, grateful to be on mission with Him.He is survived by his loving wife Jean, daughter Kathy Treadwell and husband Don, daughter Becky Faulkner and husband A.G. He is also survived by three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and a host of extended family and friends.The family of Robert E. Dixon will receive guests at Restland Funeral Home (13005 Greenville Ave, Dallas, Texas, 75243) on the evening of Monday, May 14, 2018, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. A celebration of his life will take place on Saturday, May 19, 2018, at 2:00 PM at the Robert E. Dixon Mission Equipping Center located at 5351 Catron Street, Dallas, Texas.
