Robert Hernandez's Obituary
Robert Hernandez
August 5, 1947 – March 27, 2026
Robert Hernandez, a devoted man of faith, a proud veteran, and a legendary enthusiast of golf and classic cars, passed away on March 27, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of integrity and love.
A Life of Service and Leadership
Born in San Antonio on August 5, 1947, to Rudy and Lucy Hernandez, Robert’s journey took him from the halls of Kimball High School in Dallas to the campus of Howard Payne University.
He proudly served four years in the United States Air Force before returning home to earn a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of North Texas.
Robert dedicated 37 years to the U.S. Postal Service, followed by a ten-year second career in Human Resources for the Dallas Independent School District (DISD). Beyond his professional achievements, Robert served as the steadfast patriarch of the Hernandez family. Following the passing of his father, he stepped into the role of family leader. His siblings constantly looked to him for his wise counsel, steady guidance, and unwavering support.
Faith and Family
Robert’s life was anchored by his Savior, Jesus Christ, and his wife, Sylvia. Married for nearly 56 years, they modeled a partnership built on "true love." As an ordained Deacon, Robert lived his faith through action.
Nothing brought a sparkle to his eye quite like being "Papaw." To Lucy Joy, Deuce, Oliver, and Stella, he was a permanent fixture in the stands. Whether it was 100 degrees or a cold, rainy afternoon, he was there cheering for his favorites. He was the legendary "after-school pickup champion," known for making friends with all the other parents and sharing snacks with the kids. Even in his final days, he was still sharing peanut M&Ms with anyone who stopped by to chat.
The Great Outdoors and the Open Road
Robert was a man of many passions, but he was perhaps happiest on the golf course. He would drive miles across the Metroplex to find a good green, though the score mattered far less to him than the camaraderie. Whether playing with his sons, his brother, or his colleagues, he cherished the hours of conversation and the beauty of being outdoors. His appreciation for craftsmanship extended to the open road. A silver-tongued orator and Toastmasters award winner, Robert also had a keen eye for classic cars. He owned an impressive 37 vehicles throughout his life, but his '55 Chevrolet always remained his prized possession. Robert also held a deep love for music of all genres; a gift he took great care to pass down to his children and grandchildren.
Legacy
Robert’s memory will be cherished by his beloved wife, Sylvia R. Hernandez; his sons and daughters-in-law, Adam and Joelle Hernandez and Marc and Krista Hernandez; and his grandchildren, Lucy Joy, Deuce, Oliver, and Stella.
He is also survived by his siblings, Marybeth Burchfield and her husband Butch, Ruben Hernandez, Eunice Arrambide and her husband Jonathan, and Gina Hernandez; his sisters-in-law, Mary Roberts and Toni Rodriguez; and many cherished nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Rudy and Lucy Hernandez; his parents-in-law, Mike and Estella Rodriguez; his sisters-in-law, Aurora Hernandez and Tessie Panay; and his brother-in-law, Larry Roberts.
