Robert G. "Jerry" Smith's Obituary
Preceded in death by parents Nina Pauline and William Robert Smith; sister, Margaret Jo Nelson. Survived by wife, Betty Cothran Smith; son, Jay Smith and wife Deborah; daughter, Jana Drury and husband Bob. Three granddaughters, Melanie Conley, husband Joe; Jennifer Smith; Leslie Buchanan, husband Justin; great-grandchildren, Matthew and Lillian (Lilly) Conley; Rayne Buchanan; Rowan Schaffer; other relatives and a host of friends. Jerry graduated from Sunset High School in 1950 where he was active in many school organizations. He graduated from North Texas University and was a Charter member of the Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity. Upon graduation Jerry served six years in the Air Force as a fighter pilot. After receiving an honorable discharge, he went into the insurance field. A member of Bentwood Trail Presbyterian Church, he served on a number of church boards. Jerry was a member of the Mike H. Thomas Lodge No. 1314 A.F. & A.M. He loved the game of golf and when he retired, went to work at Brookhaven Country Club as a Marshall. Jerry was responsible in organizing the first Sunset High School Reunion of June, 1950. A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, December 3 at 10:00 a.m. at Bentwood Trail Presbyterian Church, 6000 Bentwood Trail, Dallas 75252 phone 972-248-3600. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.
