My deepest condolences to Chris, Sundi, Brad and all their family members. Your father will be greatly missed by so many, as he surely touched the lives of everyone he met. His thousands of patients will attest that he was simply the best doctor they ever knew.
I’m sure you will hear many wonderful stories about your Dad this week, but this may be one you haven’t heard. In 1983 we were blessed by the long-awaited adoption of a baby girl. When I checked school district policy, I found out that, as an adoptive parent, I was not eligible for the 6 week “maternity” leave. When I told Dr. Kuhne, he insisted on writing a letter to explain the obvious similarities in the needs of natural and adoptive mothers. When I explained the situation to the director of personnel, he declined to read the letter and dismissed me with, “We have never allowed maternity leave to someone who didn’t give birth, and we never will.” I then went to the office of the Assistant Superintendent, Dr, Carr, and he read your Dad’s letter and immediately said, “You certainly can’t argue with the doctor’s reasoning.” Because of that, I was allowed to spend a crucial 6 weeks with my newborn and RISD policy was changed forever to the benefit of all adoptive parents after that. He leaves a huge hole in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
