Robert Gwyn Munday's Obituary
Robert G. Munday, longtime college professor and former DISD teacher, died on December 21,2025. Born in 1934, he spent most of his life in the Dallas area, having attended Obadiah Knight Elementary School and North Dallas High School. After graduation in 1951, he attended the University of North Texas, where he pledged Kappa Sigma social fraternity and was a member of the Student Senate. After graduation, he was employed by the DISD, where he taught in L.V. Stockard Jr. High School and later in Bryan Adams High School. Meanwhile, he began pursuing his advanced degrees, receiving the master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of North Texas in 1957 and 1965, respectively. In 1965, he was employed as Assistant Professor of English at Texas A&M University in Commerce. Shortly thereafter, he transferred to the College of Education as Associate Professor of Secondary and Higher Education. In this position he prepared teachers for the secondary schools and participated in the design and implementation of numerous new courses in the higher education component of the department. In 1970, he received the Outstanding Teacher of the Year award conferred by the University faculty; and in 1976, the Faculty Senate presented him an award for Outstanding Service to the University. In addition, the Doctoral Students’ Association named him Outstanding Graduate Professor of the Year. In 1984, he was selected to head the Department of Secondary and Higher Education, a position he held for 17 years. He served in the Faculty Senate, was elected or appointed to numerous campus committees, and was a member of various professional organizations. With his colleagues and doctoral students, he published articles in professional journals and edited several books. After he retired in 2001, the Texas A&M Board of Regents bestowed upon him the designation Professor Emeritus of Higher Education. Survivors include those many students whom he mentored. No arrangements will be made, and interment will occur at Restland Memorial Park on Greenville Avenue. Memorials may be made to the Robert (Bob) Munday Scholarship at Texas A&M University at Commerce or to the ASPCA.
