Dr. Robert Oliver Philips Jr.'s Obituary
Dallas physician and clinical innovator Robert Oliver Philips Jr. died Saturday, April 13, 2013 while recovering from surgery. Co-founder of The Center for Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine at Medical City Dallas Hospital, Dr. Philips additionally provided primary care medicine to several generations of Dallas families between the early 1970s and 2013. He was 71. A Chattanooga, Tennessee native, Dr. Philips developed a childhood love of Dallas when his father moved the family there briefly for business. After attending The Baylor School in Chattanooga and Baylor University in Waco, Philips earned his medical degree from The University of Tennessee. Dr. Philips then served as an officer in the US Army Special Forces before returning to Dallas to practice family medicine. During his early civilian medical career Dr. Philips vacationed around the world scuba diving among various exotic reefs and wrecks, a passion that combined with his knowledge of high-risk military diving to inspire his groundbreaking work in clinical hyperbaric medicine. Dr. Phillips leaves his wife Ann; his sons, Robert and wife Susan, and William and wife Tiffany; daughter Laura; granddaughter Anne Chandler; grandson Oliver, as well as many beloved friends, colleagues, and patients. And a special thanks to our sister Audie, friends Anne Delarosa, Mike and Nancy McGhee; and Greg and Wendy Savage. A memorial service will be at 3:00 PM on Thursday, April 18, 2013 in Restland Wildwood Chapel. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Dr. Phillips may be made to Jean-Michel Cousteau’s Ocean Futures Society http://www.oceanfutures.org
