Robert Leslie Runyon's Obituary
Robert Leslie Runyon, 72, died October 10, 2017 in Dallas, TX. Bob was born Mach 28, 1945 to Homer Leslie and Jean Hill Runyon in Dallas. He was a descendant of early Dallas pioneers Obadiah and Serena Hughes Knight.Bob graduated from Bryan Adams High School in 1963 where he ran track and was a Knight Commander of the Order of DeMolay. He received a BBA from Southern Methodist University and was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. Bob began as a computer programmer, then designed and implemented new systems. His success in materials management and management of systems projects led him in the 1980’s to form Material Solutions Corporation focusing first on project management, later providing personal computer hardware and customized software.“Coach Bob” enjoyed the time spent with his son most. Whether it was being a baseball or basketball coach, an Indian Guide, Webelos, or Boy Scout leader – he always found a way to get involved. An Eagle Scout himself, he served as Assistant Scoutmaster with Troop 890 while sharing his camping skills, and love of the outdoors with everyone. He particularly loved teaching orienteering, fishing, and showing others how to tie the “friendship” knot. He would hand carve neckerchief slides each month to be awarded to the patrol with the best campsite at each month’s campout. He was active in the Order of the Arrow and set an example of selfless service to others and the community. Bob also attended Woodbadge at Philmont, cooked on staff at the 1993 National Jamboree, and stayed active with the Boy Scouts even after his son attained Eagle and left for college. In 2003, he received the District Award of Merit from North Trail District of Circle Ten for his many contributions to scouting.Bob was a loving husband, father, a good friend, and mentor to many. His one-liners and sense of humor would often catch you off guard. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 41 years Lynn and son John Robert. He is also survived by his sister Serena and husband Rusty Farmer, nephew Brett and wife Melissa Ross, Emmett and Grayson Ross of Richardson, and niece Kimberly and husband Marty Morgan of Ringgold, Georgia. His parents preceded him in death.Donations may be made to Parkinson Voice Project, 646 N. Coit Road, Suite 2250, Richardson, TX 75080 – www.parkinsonvoiceproject.org.
