Robert Earl Slingerland's Obituary
After an extended illness Bob passed away September 26, 2008. He was born in Las Cruces, NM on January 25, 1924. He grew up in Kansas and Oklahoma, returning to Las Cruces, NM during his highschool years. Bob was a Navy Flighter Pilot during WWII and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. After the war he and Lois Anderson were married in Las Cruces. He attended New Mexico School of Mines where he studied Geological Engineering. Most of his career was with Texas Pacific Oil Company. During his long career he lived in several locations in the United States. Bob was a member of Lake Highlands UMC for 39 years. He was an avid coach for boy’s baseball. Bob was a ESL tutor at his church. He was a volunteer for Meals On Wheels and Network of Community Ministries for many years. He enjoyed golf, tennis, bridge, reading, and travelling. He was preceeded in death by his mother and father Day and Goldie Slingerland, and sister Marlyn Franks. He is survived by his wife of 62 years Lois Slingerland; daughters Donna Cagle and Marcy Hoffpauir; sons Rob and Phil Slingerland; 9 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. Bob was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. The family would like to extend their appreciation for the staff at Stonebridge for their caring and support, especially his Hospice caregivers Tucson and Olivia. Visitation will be held Sunday, September 28, 2008 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Restland Funeral Home. Service will be held Monday, September 29, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. at Restland Memorial Chapel.
