Dr. Robert C. Young's Obituary
Dr. Robert Young, a Dallas area pediatrician, passed away Sunday February 22, 2015 following a brief illness. He was a strong Christian, devoted family man and a compassionate and committed physician. Robert, was born in Dallas, TX, August 6 1930, the son of Dr. John Young and Isabell Young. He graduated from Texas Country Day School, predecessor to St. Mark’s School of Texas, and received his undergraduate degree from Bowdoin College in Brunswick, ME. Faith was a focal point of Robert’s life. While a student at Bowdoin College, he and several others formed a church which remains in operation today. Robert knew early on that he wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps and become a doctor, so he enrolled in medical school, ultimately receiving his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. He then served two years in the United States Air Force, serving as a general physician and Flight Surgeon for top secret U2 pilots flying espionage missions over hostile countries. Robert completed his residency at Children’s Medical Center in Dallas, then joined his father in private practice as a pediatrician. Robert provided medical care for thousands during his nearly 60-year medical career and, more often than not, treated the children and even grandchildren of previous patients. He was known for dispensing medical care along with liberal doses of parenting advice. Robert earned acclaim as an early pioneer in the field of ADD/ADHD. He founded the ADD ADHD Treatment Center that continues to provide services for youth and adults in Dallas, Plano and surrounding counties. Before the use of medication, he discovered the benefits of exercise. He believed that much-overlooked element is a key non-drug component of an ADHD treatment plan. During his years in private practice he treated many patients with exercise and medication. This combination along with his expertise in promoting the proper dosing to avoid the “zombie effect,” resulted in a 90-plus percent success rate in the treatment of ADHD. He was a long-time member of the Dallas County Medical Society and a Fellow of the American Pediatric Council. Robert leaves behind a grieving wife, Dianne Young, of Plano. Just last summer Robert and Dianne held a Wedding Covenant Renewal to mark the 40th anniversary of their marriage. In addition, Robert is survived his sister, Joanne Van Amburgh, by Dianne’s son, Tommy Gay and grandson Alex Gay and by Robert’s children, Bob Young, Susan Peterson, Deborah Ham, Mark Young, – seven grandchildren: Trey Young, Ashley Young, Chris Peterson, Jonathan Peterson, Margaret Peterson, Jennifer Ham and Thomas Young families, and 3 great grandchildren: Bradon Young, Taylor Peterson and Harper Peterson. Robert’s family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 pm on Thursday, February 26, 2015 at Restland Funeral Home. Services for Robert will take place at 2:30 pm on Friday, February 27, 2015 at The Memorial Chapel at Restland Funeral Home. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Restland Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 13005 Greenville Avenue, Dallas, TX 75243
