Reverend Roy D. Barton's Obituary
Age 84, of Irving, TX passed away peacefully on 10/18/2011. He was born on 4/10/1927 in Marfa, TX to Walter Barton and Petra Sarabia. Roy was the youngest of 3. He married Rosa Marina Bolado in San Antonio, TX. in 1952. He served in the Marine Corp for 9 months. He received a BA from Trinity University in 1954 and a BD from SMU in 1957. He was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Divinity by Huston-Tillotson University in 1972. He became an ordained minister on October 30, 1949 in the Rio Grande Conference of The United Methodist Church. He was employed by Perkins School of Theology at SMU as the founding Director of the Mexican American Program ftom 1974 to 1995. He was honored as a Distinguished Alumnus in 1991 by Perkins School of Theology, SMU. In 1994 Perkins School of Theology established the Roy D. Barton Lectureship on Hispanic Ministry to honor his years of leadership at the school. Roy was a member of Agape Memorial United Methodist Church. He enjoyed his family, friends, Sunday School Class, and dogs. He was preceded in death by his brother, Israel Jacob de la Garza. Roy will be remembered by his loving wife, Rosa; children. Roy, Martha “Marty”, Richard and his wife Vivian and Paul and his wife Beth; grandchildren, Michael Barton, Elisa Barton, and Victor Barton; sister, Rachel Castano; and niece, Liz Castano. Relatives and friends are invited to a visitation from 6 to 7pm with a prayer service to start at 7 pm on Thursday, October 20th at Agape Memorial United Methodist Church, 5111 Capitol Ave. in Dallas. They are also invited to a funeral service for Roy at 10:00am on Friday, October 21st at Restland Memorial Chapel. Internment will follow at Restland Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Agape Memorial United Methodist Church.
