Roy E. "Eddie" Greening, Jr.'s Obituary
ROY E. GREENING JR. (EDDIE) Texas lost one of its favorite sons Thursday, March 24th when Roy Edwin Greening, Jr., passed away at age 69 due to an onset of several health complications. His family was at his side, in life and in death. Roy was born Jan. 17, 1947 in Dallas. He was raised in Garland and spent his adult life in the Dallas metro area. Hence Roy’s passion for his home state, and many of the teams and quality individuals that Texas produced over his lifetime. Roy loved many things, but nothing more than his family. He is survived by Deb Greening, his wife of 41 years, and children Shannon Greening, Karen Wasch (Mike) and Ryan Greening (Shayne). Roy is also survived by five grandchildren: Benjie Greening, Ryan Greening, Hannah Wasch, Avery Wasch and Andrew Wasch, and brothers: Ivy Greening, Guy Greening, and Mark Turner. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy Edwin Greening Sr., and Mary Hilda Ward Greening Turner; and by daughter Megan Greening. Roy and Deb were married on June 15, 1974 in Honey Grove, Texas, on a blistering hot day. The wedding was small, but the life Roy and Deb built together was as big as Texas. Roy spent 20 years coaching his kids’ soccer, softball and baseball teams. In later years, he loved spending time with his grandkids. Roy also enjoyed playing golf, along with chess and bridge. Among Roy’s favorite traditions: hauling home a floor-to-ceiling Christmas tree each December. As something of a throwback to an earlier era, Roy connected to the Tom Landry years with the Dallas Cowboys. He also enjoyed watching other sports, including the Texas Rangers and many professional golfers, including Sam Snead, Jack Nicklaus and, more recently, young phenom Jordan Spieth, who, of course, is a fellow Texan. Family, loyalty and honesty were hallmarks for Roy, who spent 40 years as a hardwood lumber broker before retiring in 2014. He learned his love of woods from his grandparents, who owned a lumberyard. He was notorious as a “weather watcher,” often keeping family members up to date about fronts moving this way and that, including an international flavor covering the Philippines after Shayne joined the family. Roy enjoyed watching movies — action, adventure and mysteries were his picks — and took a small measure of pride in the fact that he never had, or needed, cable television. Over the air was fine, because he could easily tune to PBS, his favorite channel. Roy spoke with a gentlemanly southern drawl and some say the drawl became more southern as the nights wore on. But there was always a genuine nature to that drawl, and to the proud Texan who owned it. Funeral Service will take place at 3:00 pm on Saturday, March 26, 2016 at The Wildwood Chapel at Restland Funeral Home with visitation one hour prior to the service in the chapel. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Restland Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 13005 Greenville Avenue, Dallas, TX 75243.
