As most of you here don?t know, this last weekend was meant to be a family visit with Mom. We think she had bigger plans. Mom had been fighting kidney failure for many years and we think she timed her passing when we were all here. She was quite a character! Growing up as kids she instilled in us a strong work ethic, appreciation of the arts, and a steadfast religious faith. She was a medical lab technician when we were young and gave us all our vaccinations, shots, medicines and did our blood work. So we didn?t go to the doctor much. She was the doctor!! Mom was not fond of our annual camping trips with the Matlock family, but she was trooper and went along anyway. She would rather have been teaching ceramics and painting to the neighborhood moms in our garage in Tulsa, which was her first of many art studios in her life. Our lives were filled with a steady stream of art showings. Her appreciation of all arts was a dominant force in her life. The other force in her life was our Dad. They were married for over 50 years until he died in 2006. The two of them shaped our futures. There was always music playing wherever she was. She loved all music but preferred popular music rather than classical music. She was even the manager of Kim?s rock-n-roll band in the 60?s. As kids we were put through various lessons for piano, dance, art, and more. Here dynamic personality and energy was at times exhausting for us. She was always busy. She would frequently escape from home, get in her car and get in trouble, especially in her more recent years. Finally we had to take the car keys away. She would always remember everyone?s birthday, anniversaries, and send out holiday cards and letters. Over the recent years she would have some setbacks but always bounced back until recently. This January she had a more serious setback and struggled to recover but just didn?t have the strength. Mom held on a little while longer to see her whole family again for the last time. Just like her art, she was a real piece of work!!:)
We will always remember those Markle/Matlock camping trips.
Nell was one-of-a-kind. It took a very special, strong woman to "handle" George. It was a beautiful match. So glad I was able to have grown up with the Markle's in our life. Nell, enjoy your new journey, and rest forever in Peace.
