Rufus Allen Dodgen Jr.'s Obituary
Rufus Allen Dodgen, Jr. (Allen), 84, of Dallas, Texas, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 28, 2023, surrounded by his family. Allen was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and brother.
Allen was born on May 3, 1938, in Amarillo, Texas, to Rufus and Dorothy Dodgen. He grew up in Shamrock, Texas, and graduated from Shamrock High School in 1956. He earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting from Texas A&M University in 1960 where he also served in the Corp of Cadets. On February 4, 1961, he married the love of his life, Judy Lynn Boyd of El Paso, Texas, his wife for over 62 years. Allen served in the Auditor General section of the US Air Force until his honorable discharge in 1964. Allen and Judy settled in Dallas, Texas where he was a CPA and co-founder of Saville Dodgen and Co. where he spent almost his entire career. He retired from the firm as Managing Partner in 2008. Allen was actively involved in many service organizations and held numerous leadership positions including: Committee Chair for Troop 415 of the Boy Scouts of America, as Vice President and a member the Board of Directors of the Texas Society of CPAs, and as President of the Dallas Chapter of the Texas Society of CPAs. He was also honored as CPA of the Year for the Dallas Chapter in 1991. He was actively involved in his church, First Baptist Church of Dallas, where he was a deacon and served in various Sunday school leadership positions. He loved being outdoors and enjoyed hunting, fishing, raising cattle, reading western novels, and spending time at the ranch with his grandchildren.
Allen is survived by his wife, Judy Dodgen, his two sons, Ken Dodgen and his wife Kathleen of Dallas, Texas, and David Dodgen and his wife Dana of Dallas, Texas; six grandchildren, Lauren, Drew, Natalie, Zach, Ryan, and Truett; his brother Don Dodgen and his wife Nancy of Scottsdale, Arizona; his sister Candace Land and her husband Randy of Ft. Worth, Texas; and his nephews Zeb Land, Jonathan Land, and Mike Dodgen. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rufus and Dorothy, his sister Carolyn Dodgen, his granddaughter Abby Grace Dodgen, and his nephew Andrew Dodgen.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, April 3, 2023 at First Baptist Church of Dallas. The family has planned a visitation at 10:00 a.m. followed by a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. in Truett Chapel. In lieu of flowers the family requests you make a donation in Allen’s name to the General Scholarship Fund at Criswell College (https://www.criswell.edu/give/).
