Ruth Esther Schultz Sappenfield's Obituary
Ruth Esther Schultz Sappenfield, age 87, of Dallas, Texas passed away peacefully on August 13th, 2011 at Autumn Leaves Retirement. Born on December 4th, 1923, in Batesville, Indiana, she was preceded in death by her parents, Burt M. Schultz and Irene Ingle Schultz, her beloved husband Luther W. Sappenfield and sister, Mary Elizabeth Schultz Ensinger. Her sister, Martha Sutton of Indianapolis, Indiana and brother, Robert Schultz of Cincinnati, Ohio, numerous loving nieces and nephews, and many dear friends, survive her. She graduated from Batesville High School with honors and worked for a number of years for her father’s newspaper, The Times, Batesville, Indiana. Ruth and Luther were married January 13, 1946 in Batesville, Indiana, for 63 years. During their marriage they were able to travel around the world with Luther’s work. Ruth adapted to each location with excitement and eager to learn about the history of each location, even learning the language. She was a cultured lady. They belonged to the Dallas Opera Society, many museums; they were students of history, and gracious hosts. When Luther worked for DeGolyer and McNaughton in Dallas, she loved attending tea at Mrs. DeGolyer’s. She spent many hours volunteering at schools helping children, hospitals, and congregations. She and Luther moved to Dallas in 1962, where they became active members of First United Lutheran Church. She was a member of the sewing group (quilters), choir, and alter guild. They loved hosting card and game parties in their home. A special thank you to Lois Jacobi for her years of friendship and support. Much appreciation extended to Gabriella Gruschkus and the Lutheran Foundation of the Southwest for their loving care and support during Ruth’s final years. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to First United Lutheran Church, Dallas, Texas or the charity of your choice. Graveside Services will be held at Restland Memorial Park, Tuesday, August 16, 2011 at 1:00 p.m.with a Memorial Service to follow at First United Lutheran Church, 6202 E. Mockingbird Lane, Dallas, Texas.
