Ruth Shields' Obituary
SHIELDS, RUTH On January 18, 2007, Ruth Vehr Shields went home to her loving Father. She was a faithful and loving wife, devoted mother and friend to all. Ruth believed in angels and knew that she had at least one special angel who watched over her and her family. She is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, Charles O. Shields, and their five children, Charles O. Shields, Jr., Robert L. Shields and wife Jane Ann, Stephen Shields, James D. Shields and wife Cathie, Kathryn E. Eriksen and husband David, and her six grandchildren. Ruth was a registered nurse during World War II, and served at Kelly Field in San Antonio. There she met Charles, who was convalescing from a war injury. They fell in love and began their life’s journey in 1949. Children arrived and many happy memories were created at their home in North Dallas. Ruth was an avid student and was fascinated with people, and earned her Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of North Texas. Ruth enjoyed the challenge and satisfaction of a psychology practice in North Dallas by helping her patients gain insight into their relationships. Ruth was an active member of St. Rita’s Catholic Church and a faithful member of the Adult Bible Study group. She loved to square dance with the Swinging Saints and enjoyed the company of their many life-long friends. A rosary will be held at Restland Funeral Home on January 21, 2007 at 5 pm. A funeral mass will be held at St. Rita’s Catholic Church on Monday, January 22 at 10:00 am. A private burial service will be held afterwards. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be given to the American Heart association in the name of Ruth Vehr Shields.
