Sally Lee McClung's Obituary
Sarah Lee (Sally) Woldert McClung, called Mamie by her Grandchildren, was born in Tyler, Texas on July 14, 1922 to Mamye and Alex Woldert Jr. She passed away on March 29, 2011. Sally graduated from Tyler High School in 1939, attended Chevy Chase Junior College in Washington D.C., and returned to Austin to graduate from the University of Texas with a B.A. degree in 1943 where she was a member of Chi Omega Sorority. In 1944, Sally married Elliott McClung of Dallas, an Ensign in the U.S. Navy at the time. After his tour of duty, and the end of the war, Sally and Elliott settled in University Park in 1945, where they remained residents for the rest of their lives. Elliott was an insurance broker and estate planner for Southwestern Life Insurance Company. Always a self-starter, Sally received her insurance license and helped Elliott in his business. In her earlier years she devoted hours to volunteer work with both Baylor and Presbyterian Hospitals, the Society for Abandoned and Neglected Children, and many other philanthropic organizations. Mrs. McClung was a Past President of Chi Omega Alumni of Dallas, Past President of the Dallas Woman’s Panhellenic, Life Member of Chi Omega Corporation Advisory Board and a past member at large of the Iota Chapter of Chi Omega in Austin Texas. In 1972, Mrs. McClung began taking small groups of friends on her trips and in 1976 she joined All Aboard Travel, Inc. as an outside salesperson. Besides travel, her other hobby and pleasure was playing bridge. She was an ACBL Life Master and played the game at every opportunity in Dallas and in tournaments throughout the United States, Bermuda and Europe. Mrs. McClung was a member of University Park United Methodist Church, the Dallas Woman’s Club, Past President of Colliopi Club and many other unofficial “clubs” with friends who got together on a weekly basis. Always the life of the party, Sally never met a stranger and was a joy to be around. She cherished her friendships and family and touched the lives of all she met. Sally is preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Elliott McClung and by her son Elliott (Mac) McClung, Jr. and her brother and his wife Nina and Alex Woldert III. She is survived by her two sons, Alex Anthony (Tony) McClung and William Byron (Bill) McClung, their two beloved wives, Jeanne Sable McClung and Jill Roberts McClung, and four granddaughters, she loved dearly; Sara McClung Hale and husband John, Katie, Molly and Carol McClung. In Tyler, she is survived by her niece Laura McMullen and husband Martin, a great nephew Hayden McMullen; also, cousins Tom Woldert and Chris Woldert and their families. In lieu of flowers, her favorite charities were: Cal Farley’s Boys or Girls Ranch (P.O. Box 1890 , Amarillo, TX, 79105) or Macular Degeneration Research, 22512 Gateway Center Drive, P.O. Box 1952, Clarksburg, MD 20871.
