I too, was a Vietnam veteran, but gratefully did not suffer as a POW. Though I never had the privilege to meet Sam personally I did send him several letters as my congressman from my district on several occasions. I always received replies.
I have never held any man in a higher esteem as I have Sam Johnson. This is truly a great man and most definitely my hero. I have never been so sadden by one's passing. He will be sorely missed by all.

Sam Johnson was a great American. We met him and his wife after we moved into the Briarwood addition in Plano in 1977, just after he had moved away, at one of his former neighbors wedding. We are honored to have met him and considered him a friend and neighbor. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family. He will be missed.

Sam Johnson spent his life in service to his Country and to others. Fighter pilot, War hero. Legislator. Congressman. Father. Husband. Gentleman. Friend. He was all of these things, and in full measure. Sam Johnson was truly a hero, and yet a modest, unassuming, honest man. We are all the richer for having him. And now the poorer for his leaving.
Goodbye, Sam. You'll be missed.

Sam was my hero. He helped get me through some tough times as a POW in Vietnam. For nearly three years he and I were never more than ten feet apart in our adjacent small cells,, but we never saw each other. Tapping through the wall we played chess, studied French, and dreamed of house building. As a member of Congress he stood for his beliefs in America, military strength, and respect for religion. We miss you already Sam.

Sam Johnson was a man of integrity and honesty throughout his life- he never wavered from his strong Christian faith in Vietnam or Congress. He brought honor to every situation and was regarded in high esteem by colleagues and acquaintances. A very wise true Servant Leader. In heaven, I am sure that he was greeted with these words:
"Well done, thou good and faithful servant". .
Locally, I would cross paths with Sam Johnson at El Fenix in Plano and in years past, he had a special visit and picture with my daughter, Robyn Byrd Michalove at his D.C. office.
