Sandy was born on March 5, 1936, in Montreal, Canada, the daughter of Jack Davis and Annie Simon Davis. A proud graduate of SUNY Plattsburgh, Sandy also took courses at Pratt Institute, and thereafter dedicated much of her life to the arts and education. Her professional life flourished when she taught art and photography at Gallaudet University, where her passion for visual storytelling and nurturing creativity touched the lives of many students. Her classrooms were often described as sanctuaries for artistic expression, a testament to her supportive and patient nature as well as her infectious enthusiasm for sharing her craft.
Sandy's ardent appreciation for the arts was deeply ingrained in her life. She was an avid supporter of the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and in later years the Dallas Symphony and the Dallas Opera. Her love for classical music and opera was more than just a pastime—it was a journey of exploration. Her passion for opera led her on grand adventures, including trips to destinations throughout the world that allowed her to immerse herself in diverse cultures and artistic experiences, which she cherished deeply.
Traveling not only fueled Sandy's interest in opera but also her passion for photography. With her camera at the ready, she captured the beauty of the world through her lens, creating a vast collection of memories and stories. Her work in various artistic mediums left an indelible mark on those who had the pleasure of witnessing her creativity.
Sandy was not just a figure in the arts community, as she was also a loyal friend and steadfast confidant. Her willingness to listen and serve as a sounding board for those around her made her a cherished companion. She shared her life and knowledge with an open heart and wisdom that her intimate circle of friends admired.
Although not observant in a traditional sense, Sandy’s belief in Judaism was a guiding force in her life, reflected in her everyday compassion and her respect for those around her.
