Shirley Elizabeth Benson Moseley's Obituary
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Shirley Elizabeth Moseley at the age of 84, on November 24, 2016 near her home in Lago Vista, Texas. Shirley was born on July 31, 1932 to William and Elizabeth Benson in Highland Park, Michigan. Shirley was raised in Detroit were she graduated from St. Rita’s high school. She was married and spent her early family years in Royal Oak, Michigan raising her four children and supporting them through all their many activities at the local schools. During this time, she worked for Bill Williams Portrait Studios where her people skills and common business sense made her a valuable employee. Shirley was a positive influence in the lives of her children and their friends. Her home was always open to them and she enjoyed the laughter and simple pleasures of daily life. Shirley moved to Richardson, Texas in 1974 where she continued to make new friends and share her hospitality. She was a warm and welcoming person working as a secretary at several Dallas area law firms where she was affectionately known as “Mom.” She took joy in traveling to many family events where she was especially known for her abundant comfort foods. Her family and her grandchildren always looked forward to her visits for special events and celebrations. She was a great listener and her practical advice and support were counted on by many. Shirley was well known in the wider circles of her family’s friends and was admired for her warmth and genuine compassion. She was fiercely independent, liked doing crossword puzzles, enjoyed reading, watching all the Saturday cooking shows on public television and sharing recipes with family and friends. She was very proud that all four of her children put themselves through college. The life accomplishments of her grandchildren also delighted her. She remained close with her two brothers, sharing weekly calls to keep in touch with family events and to lend support in times of need. In retirement, Shirley moved to Lago Vista, Texas to be near her son. Shirley leaves behind to mourn her passing and cherish her memory her two brothers, David Benson and family of Sterling Heights, Michigan and William Benson of Rogers City, Michigan and her children, Beth Moseley of San Francisco, California; Dr. Lynne Moseley of Beverly Hills, Michigan; Mark Moseley (Lynn) of Lago Vista, Texas; and Richard Moseley (Maria) of Brisbane, California. She was a wonderful “Gramma” to Emmalie Moseley of Denver, Colorado; Andrew Moseley-Gholl of Chicago, Illinois; Austin Moseley of San Antonio, Texas; Audrey Moseley-Gholl of Beverly Hills, Michigan and Albert Moseley of Brisbane, California. She also leaves behind nieces, nephews and cousins in Michigan and Texas who will miss her warm smile. Her kindness, honesty and unselfishness will be in our hearts forever. At her request, there will not be a service. Shirley will be laid to rest with her father at Restland cemetery in Dallas, Texas. We ask that you remember her kindness to others and honor her by passing it along. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Central Texas Food Bank (centraltexasfoodbank.org) or to the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center (wildflower.org). Arrangements are under the direction of Restland Funeral Home and Memorial Park located at 13005 Greenville Avenue, Dallas, TX 75243. No services have been scheduled at this time.
