Stanley Winfrey Holcomb's Obituary
Holcomb was born at Sulphur Springs, Texas, on August 3, 1931, to Jarrett Conklin (J.C.) and Hollie Winfrey Holcomb. He died on January 28, 2014, at Medical City Dallas Hospital from complications caused by Alzheimers disease. Stan grew up in Sulphur Springs and graduated from Sulphur Springs High School in 1948 at age 16. He continued his education at East Texas State Teachers College (now A & M Commerce) and received his B.S. degree in Physics in 1952. He moved to Mountain View, California, to begin his career at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (now NASA) and to further his education. He earned his Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University on June 14, 1958, and married the love of his life, Virginia Louise Arnold, on June 21, 1958. It was difficult concentrating on studies while conducting a romance. Daughter Lynn Marie was a delightful addition to the family and Stan accepted a position with Texas Instruments. So the family moved to Richardson and son, Jeffrey Allen joined the family in 1961. Stan continued his career for 31 years at TI where he did product development on such things as calculators, watches, cameras, hearing aids, etc. He was very innovative and received patents for his designs. He was on the team developing Ronald Reagan’s Star Wars defense system (SDI) when a traffic accident interrupted his career and he retired. After retirement from TI he opened a small business, Stan’s Specialties, and repaired clocks (a skill he learned from his dad) and restored antique pump organs. Stan and Ginny were charter members and active participants with the Kissin’ Kuzzin Square Dance Club for 40 years and he leaves behind many good friends. His love of music inspired him to build a pipe organ in the home and acquire a number of large instruments. This terrible disease took him away a piece at a time and now he is restored in the kingdom of God. Survivors include his “sweet wife”, Virginia; daughter, Lynn Marie and husband, Charles Duhon; son, Jeffrey Allen and wife, Tammy B. Holcomb; grandchildren, Jasmine Ying Duhon, Jennifer and husband, Jared Elder, James Noble, and great granddaughter, Norah Grace Elder, and many friends. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to First Presbyterian Church Richardson (organ fund), the Alzheimers Association or charity of choice. Visitation will be held from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM Sunday, February 2, 2014 at Restland Funeral Home. Graveside service will be held Monday, January 3, 2014 at 3:00 PM at Restland Memorial Park.
