Susanne S. Boone's Obituary
Susanne Sheridan “Sheri” Fish Boone of Dallas, TX passed away on March 31, 2026 surrounded by her loving family: children, grandchildren and in-laws. This came one month after a party thrown to celebrate her 87th birthday. Sheri was born February 28, 1939 in Manhattan, New York City to the late Edmond Stuart and Vivian Harner Ward Fish. Her sister, Pamela Fish Matacotta came along 5 years later. They lived on the Upper East Side, on Gracie Terrace, along the East River. Edmond was in PR and a journalist; Vivian had earlier graduated college, a somewhat rare feat for the times. Later the Fishes migrated to Western Pennsylvania. Sheri graduated from Mt Lebanon High School outside Pittsburgh, PA in 1956, and earned her bachelor’s degree from Hood College in Frederick, MD in 1960. She immediately received her teaching license and began teaching 2nd grade. The kids loved “Miss Fish” who loved them back. Beyond teaching them the “3 R’s” she especially tried to instill in them her love of reading. Sheri was a lifelong reader who always had multiple books on her bedside table; some she’d started, with others in the queue. Her grandkids all have great memories of going to the library or bookstore with her. Sheri met and married Daniel J. Boone in 1962. They moved from Wilmington, DE, to Louisville, KY, to Fort Worth in 1970, then settled in Dallas in 1972. Along the way they welcomed 3 children: Michael Stuart, David Jury and Sheridan Leigh. They separated in 1978 which caused Sheri to rejoin the workforce, albeit not as a teacher. To raise the kids she worked in a physician’s office and ultimately moved into inside sales for a serial entrepreneur. She always made her kids the center of her life. The teacher in her excelled at inspiring them to do well in school; behave and follow rules (largely followed until the high school years); speak using correct grammar; help with household chores; read; play multiple sports; take music lessons; “stop watching TV and go outside!”; to just be kids. She loved animals and always kept pets. As a young girl, there was the Tippy (“Tippecanoe and Tyler too”) her pet Cocker Spaniel. Later the Boone family embraced dogs and cats names King Tut, Scheherazade, MG (Mama’s Girl), Chesapeake, Strudel and Chin-Chin. She was also a good mom/grandmom to her children’s families’ pets who all gravitated to Poppy. In 1993 she became the quintessential grandmother. Sheri loved spending time with her 8 grandchildren. To them she was “Poppy,” the name she chose as an homage to her beloved maternal grandfather, George Ward. Poppy truly knew them and had unique relationships with each based on their individuality. She continued a tradition started by her mother (“Gammy” to the grand-and great grandchildren) by hosting Poetry Tea Parties with silly hats, and Cousin Craft Day where all 8 cousins/grandkids would gather to make crafts -- occasionally Christmas ornaments -- eat snacks, share stories and have quality time together. As the grandkids grew, she procured a Lakehouse for a week every summer for the families to come together for fun (and lifelong memories). She was a staple in her grandchildren’s lives, a confidante, rescue call, shopping partner, and source of wisdom and encouragement. And this entire family rallied to be around her during her final days. For all her many good qualities, her diet would not be counted among them. While she often fed her young children liver, fish sticks, mystery casseroles and vegetables fresh from a can, they realized as young adults that she did not partake in the same foods! In her later years, her Favorite Foods Pyramid featured heavy doses of whole milk, Mountain Dew, bacon, deviled eggs, cheese balls and jellybeans to supplement a more conventional adult diet! Sheri was a people person embodied. She loved talking, listening, laughing. She had a knack for making whoever she interacted with feel heard and feel special; it was her superpower to make you the star and most important person in the room. She enjoyed giving others the spotlight.
Let her friends, children’s friends, nieces and caregivers share why she was irreplaceable to them.
