Susie Joe Yium's Obituary
Susie Joe Yium passed away peacefully at home on December 4, 2022, at the age of 90, following a brief illness.
Born in 1932 in Altheimer, AR to Fook Gion Joe and Shi Cheung, she was an avid student and lifelong learner. She attended Arkansas Tech and then University of Arkansas where she received a Fulbright Scholarship to study abroad in France. After earning her Master’s degree from University of Arkansas, she moved to Dallas where she met Pershing Yium. Susie taught French and Spanish in Mesquite ISD until she retired; and she was an active choir member at Lake Highlands UMC.
Susie and Pershing enjoyed traveling in their retirement years throughout the US and France. A highlight of their travels was a family trip to China to visit the ancestral home. In her retirement, Susie also took up line dancing, which kept her young at heart and nimble on her feet.
Predeceased by her beloved husband Pershing; younger sister Grace (Jim) Toh of Downers Grove, IL; and older brother Edmund (Irene) Gion of Havre de Grace, MD; Susie will be remembered for her sweet nature and love of hats. She will be greatly missed by daughter Melinda of Dallas, TX; son Nicholas (Elizabeth) of McKinney, TX; older sister Alice Dong of Dallas, TX; younger brother Leland Gion of Pine Bluff, AR; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and friends.
