Suzanne Shumaker Matthews' Obituary
Suzanne went to be with her Lord, Jesus Christ on September 20th of 2025 at the age of 87. She was born January 17th of 1938, to Mary M. and Clifford H. Shumaker in Dallas, TX.
Residing in Dallas until 2018, where she moved to Richmond, TX. She grew up in the Park Cities, graduating from Highland Park High School in 1955. She attended Southern Methodist University and was a member of the Delta Gamma Sorority.
On May 31st of 1957, she married her high school sweetheart, Tom Durham Matthews, Jr. in Perkins Chapel on the SMU campus. Her husband became an attorney, and they resided in both the Park Cities and Dallas. They were married for 58 years.
She was a member of the Highland Park United Methodist Church from 1971 until her death. She joined the HPUMC hand bell choir in 1973, and she rang for 26 years. Following her retirement from bell ringing, she sang in the Chancel Choir for eight years, serving 2 years on the Choir Council.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Clifford and Mary Shumaker in 1992 and 2015, respectively; and husband, Tom Matthews, in 2015. Survivors include Son and Daughter-in-Law, Mark and Kathy Matthews of Ft. Worth, TX; Daughter and Son-in-Law, Amy and Keith Brochhausen of East Bernard, TX; as well as her grandchildren, Walker and Rebecca Matthews.
Through the years, her hobbies varied from sewing, needlepoint, cross stitch, playing bridge, fishing, and re-decorating homes of friends and family. Her happiest times were when she was with her children, grandchildren, and many friends.
Services will be conducted by Reverend Geoffrey Moore, Ph.D, at Restland Memorial Park at 10:30 in the Memorial Chapel. Following the service, the family will greet guests at a local restaurant. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation or the Music Ministry of Highland Park United Methodist Church.
