Sylvia L. Oaks' Obituary
Sylvia Loretta Oaks was born to the union of Henry Harvey Sharp and Lela Talmadge Sharp in De Kalb, Texas on February 14, 1939. She was the 4th of 7 girls. The family left for Washington State when she was 6 years old. She received her early education in the Bremerton School District and later graduated from Olympic Junior College in Washington. As a young child she was baptized at Ebenezer A.M.E. Church in Bremerton. At 19 she moved to Dallas, Texas to live with her aunts. She attended Evening Chapel A.M.E. and Boll St. C.M. E. Church. She married and raised two daughters. After more than 30 years working as a Word Processor, she retired from State Farm Insurance Company. She was known and loved for being “sweet and sassy,” as she had a feisty personality and unique way of getting people to do her bidding. Although she spoke her mind, she was warm and loving. The family continues to delight in the hilarious stories surrounding her no-nonsense attitude when it came to protecting her loved ones. She had been known to kick in a door and even block a police car to defend her family. She loved family gatherings and competitive game time. Because of her big heart, over her lifetime she generously opened her home to many that needed a place to live. In addition she has welcomed many into her heart as her extended family. Many may not know that she loved Marvin Gaye and loved to laugh and dance. She loved wearing Chanel No. 5 and as a Valentine’s Day baby, it came as no surprise that her favorite color was red. She loved wearing hats with her Sunday’s best; if you walked into her room you would see a shelf made especially to hold her array of hats. She later joined St. Paul White Rock A.M.E. Church where she held many offices including Missionary President and served as a Steward. She had a servant’s heart, loving spirt and loved to give; she enjoyed packing up clothing and preparing food for the homeless. Most recently, she was a member of Greater Harvest Church. She was an avid reader and would study her Bible every day, spending hours on the computer typing and printing her lesson. She loved sharing the Word with others. She always said to “trust in the Lord and love Him.” She loved her family and people, but most of all, she loved the Lord and proclaimed her love for Him until the very end.She leaves to cherish her memory, her daughters: Lauretta Roberts of Los Angeles, Ca., Jacqueline Bearden (Franklin Bearden Jr.) of Garland Texas; her sisters: Coquese Cooper of Riverside California, Faustine Chambers (Bill Chambers) of San Diego, Ca., Susie Lee of San Diego, Ca., Cynthia Elliott of San Jose, Ca., Margaret Sharp (Charlie) of Dallas, Texas.
