Theo Shirley Fudge's Obituary
In Loving Memory of Theo Shirley Fudge
June 30, 1926 – September 21, 2023
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Shirley Fudge, a devoted follower of Christ, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend. She peacefully transitioned to eternal life at her home on Thursday, September 21, 2023, at the age of 97, surrounded by her loving family. She is now reunited with her beloved husband Robert S. Fudge, who preceded her in death in 2018.
Shirley was born on June 30, 1926, in Dallas, TX to Franklin and Theodosha Blackburn. She grew up in Dallas, where she developed a deep love for her church, family, cooking, and the simple joys of life. She was known for her spunky and spicy personality, her unwavering kindness, and her ability to help others.
After Shirley and Robert were joined in matrimony on April 3, 1947, their love story became one-of-a-kind. Together, they shared 71 years of marriage, nurturing a bond that served as an inspiration to all who knew them. Shirley lived life to the fullest. She received her Master’s in Education, way before it was common for women to do so and was a teacher for 40 years focusing on special needs children. She was even a bus driver for the inner-city middle school where she worked in Dallas before her retirement. Her students and family knew her to be generous and kind, and no one wanted to disappoint her. People would call her “4-feet and concrete.” She always used to say that her father often told her that TNT came in small packages. She was a force.
Shirley and Robert lived out their retirement years on their farm in Caddo Mills, raising horses, cattle, geese, chickens and more. Shirley loved babies, seafood, sports, sharing her recipes and hosting family functions. She often shared these passions with her family and friends. Whether it was hauling granddaughters to horse shows, attending their softball games, or traveling overseas in her 80’s to see her son and his family. Shirley approached life with enthusiasm and adventure.
Shirley was known for her generous spirit and unwavering faith. She and Robert were active members of their community churches where they volunteered their time to various charitable causes and served as a source of comfort and inspiration to those in need. Although Robert’s passing left a void in her heart, her faith and resilience allowed her to live a life filled with purpose and grace. She continued to live on her farm in Caddo Mills until the very end, which is exactly what she wanted. Her legacy of kindness and compassion will continue to live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her.
Shirley is survived by her two sons, Robert Fudge and spouse Carol, Mack Fudge and spouse Sandra; four grandchildren, Gretchen Fudge, Erin Snodgrass, Caleb Fudge and Joshua Fudge; two great grandchildren, Piper Snodgrass, Lane Snodgrass; and many nieces, nephews and friends that will miss her dearly. We find comfort in the knowledge that Shirley is now rejoicing in the presence of the Lord, reunited with her husband and other loved ones who have gone before her.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 7, 2023, at Restland Funeral Home (13005 Greenville Ave, Dallas, TX 75243) from 9 a.m-11a.m. Family and friends are invited to honor and remember her. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Cornerstone Church in Caddo Mills reflecting Shirley Fudge’s commitment to her faith and love for her church. We want to thank Cornerstone for their compassionate care during the last few months, recognizing that they were true instruments of God’s love and support.
