What a beautiful tribute. I know she cherished every minute you spent with her the past year. Thanksgiving and Christmas with you was especially important.
For Nonnie, Love Nick. Pat McLean, known to her grandchildren affectionately as Nonnie, was one of the kindest women I?ve ever known. She always gave freely her time and love. Pat, or Patti as her friends and husband called her, was born in Chicago in 1929 to two immigrants who gave her the proper Saints name, Theresa. She loved to tell the story about how her parents named her Theresa but they never called her by that name. In fact, she didn?t find out her name was Theresa until her first year at Catholic school. The nuns insisted the students all be called by their proper names so for the next twelve years she was Theresa at school and Patti on the side. She claims she never liked the name Theresa. But I think it?s a beautiful name and it suits her perfectly. Her patron saint is St. Therese the Little Flower. Saint Therese said what matters in life is not ?great deeds but great love?. They call it St. Therese?s ?little way.? My Nonnie lived her own life doing small acts of great love. Whether it be for a neighbor, a family member, or a friend, she was always happy to help someone in need. Never did she hesitate to offer to make a loved one something to eat, which for me was always breakfast no matter what time of day. I remember every summer she would put a cold can of soda in the mailbox for the mailman, Stanley. She always wrapped it in foil to keep it cold for him. It was those little acts of loving kindness that made my grandmother so special. Saint Therese said, ?I will spend my heaven doing good on earth. I will let fall a shower of roses.? Like Saint Therese, my grandmother was always mild, and caring, and showered her grandchildren in affection. When I was in elementary school she walked me to school every day and she?d often volunteer at school events. She was always active in The Church and she taught several years of CCD from the time her daughters were young all the way until I was confirmed. Nonnie was my biggest fan and encouraged me in everything I did. I grew up in her house and Nonnie and Grandpa will always be ?home? to me. Her death leaves me with a huge hole in my heart. But I will remember all of her kindnesses and her abundance of love. Nonnie, I love you so much. I already miss you deeply. But your patience, and affection, and little acts of love will stay with me forever.
I love you mom- and Nick and I miss you so much.
