Thomas "Les" Massey Jr.'s Obituary
Thomas Leslie "Les" Massey, of Garland, Texas, passed away peacefully on June 21, 2026, at the age of 80.
Les was born on June 24, 1945, in Garland, Texas, to Tom Massey and Ira Mae (Simmons) Massey. Throughout his life, he was known for his steadfast strength, gentle spirit, and the genuine care he showed to everyone around him. He found joy in the simple things—good conversation, helping others, talking sports, and spending time with the people he loved most. Whether offering a helping hand, welcoming visitors into his home, or simply enjoying the company of family and friends, Les had a way of making everyone feel at home.
Les was drafted into the United States Army in 1966 and proudly served as a communications specialist during the Vietnam era. Following his military service, he continued his career in communications with AT&T, where he built a long and rewarding career. His dedication, strong work ethic, and willingness to help others earned the respect of those who worked alongside him.
One of the greatest blessings of Les's life was his marriage to the love of his life, Patti (Verble) Massey. Their story began in the seventh grade, where they first met and formed a bond that would last a lifetime. Les and Patti were married on January 20, 1964, in Dallas, Texas, beginning a marriage built on love, partnership, and unwavering devotion. Together they welcomed their daughter, Leslie, who was the pride and joy of their lives. They built a home where family and friends were always welcome and created countless cherished memories together.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Patti (Verble) Massey, and his parents, Tom Massey and Ira Mae (Simmons) Massey.
Les is lovingly remembered by his daughter, Leslie, and her partner, Ryan; his sister, Gwen Westfall; and many extended family members and friends who will forever cherish his memory.
To Leslie, her dad was the person who always made her feel safe. She knew that as long as he was nearby—even hearing him snoring from another room—everything would be okay. His love was steady, reassuring, and unconditional.
One memory that has always stayed with Leslie was from when she was ill as a teenager. Although the doctor assured them she would recover, she was frightened. Les stayed up with her throughout the night, holding and comforting her, even though he had to work the next morning. In his arms, she knew she was safe.
Les also showed unwavering love and devotion to his beloved wife, Patti. He cared for her with patience and compassion throughout her illness, always making sure she felt supported, comforted, and deeply loved.
Above all else, family was the center of Les's life. He wanted those he loved to know they would never face life alone. Every conversation with Leslie ended the same way: "I love you, and I'll be right here." Those words, and the love behind them, are a gift she will carry with her always.
In his later years, one of Les's greatest joys was spending time with his daughter, Leslie, and the people she brought into his life. Leslie often visited with her best friends, Jolene and Amie, whom Les affectionately called his "ladies." Their visits filled his home with laughter, classic country music, football games on TV, and the simple joy of being together. Leslie's partner, Ryan, shared a special bond with Les, always willing to lend a hand before settling in to talk sports. Les also looked forward to visits from Leslie's lifelong friends, Amy and Danny, whose friendship and willingness to help whenever they were in town meant so much to him. Les also cherished the close relationship he shared with his sister, Gwen, and looked forward to their conversations several times each week.
Following Patti's passing, Les carried her memory with him every day. During that time, the love and support of family and friends became a great source of comfort. Leslie would like to extend her heartfelt gratitude to Tina, Leslie's lifelong friend whom she considers a sister, and to Tina and her daughters, Hannah and Kyleigh, along with Kyleigh's daughter, Lailah, for the unwavering care, companionship, and kindness they showed Les. Their friendship and devotion will always be remembered with deep appreciation.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, July 10, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Restland Memorial Park in Garland, Texas. The service will take place in the Garden of Prayer section, near the cemetery's north-central area.
Following the graveside service, family and friends are invited to gather for light refreshments at the Restland Events Center, where they may share memories and celebrate Les's life together.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has offered prayers, love, and support during this difficult time.
As you leave today, we hope you'll think of Les, put on some classic country music, and remember the words everyone came to expect whenever they headed out the door: "Y’all be careful." Then, with a smile, imagine hearing his familiar reassurance one last time: "I'll be here."
