Thomas Motley Smith's Obituary
SMITH, THOMAS MOTLEY born in Ranger, Texas October 9, 1920 died at his home in Dallas, Texas December 17, 2013. Predeceased by his parents, Will and Ruth Smith, and two sisters in childhood, Edith and Mary Ruth, and his son, Douglas Vaughan Smith. Survived by his wife of 68 years, Joan L Smith and his son, Alan (Margaret); daughter, Kathryn (John); grandsons, Christopher(April), Cameron (Christa), James(Debbie), Colin, Kyle and great niece, Helen(Caleb) Barton; five great’ grandchildren and other loved family and friends. A gifted pilot, Tommy (Smitty to the flying community) was a veteran of the Royal Canadian Air Force in WWII and a long time flying instructor (winner of the inaugural Flight Instructor of the Year given by the FAA) and FAA Examiner. Tommy retired from flying at the age of 89 with over 48,000 hours of flight time … most of it in the right instructor’s seat … an accomplishment that may never be equaled. Visitation will be from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM Friday, December 20, 2013 at Restland Funeral Home. Service will be held Saturday, December 21, 2013 at 3:00 PM at Restland Memorial Chapel.
