Thomas "Tom" Xavier Coronado's Obituary
Thomas Xavier Coronado, first son of Francisco Xavier and Barbara Entriken Coronado, brother of Charles Jose Coronado and Kate Coronado Johnson, and father of Spencer Xavier Coronado, passed away peacefully on April 23, 2020. He was known as Tommy, Tom, Dad, and “Hey buddy!” by his family and friends. His positive attitude, sense of humor, and numerous interests including gardening, judo, and teaching math were some of the ways in which he brightened the world around us. He was born in El Paso, Texas in 1959 and raised in Dallas, Texas by his parents, Frank and Barbara Coronado who instilled love, faith, humor, and integrity into their son.
Tom loved the outdoors and he spent summers during high school at the family ranch in Mexico and canoed the Canadian wilderness with his friends at Camp Kooch i Ching. He was an avid bodybuilder, boxed in the Golden Gloves in Austin, competed in wrestling events, and obtained his brown belt in Judo as an adult. After graduating from St. Mark’s School of Texas, Tom attended the Red McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin. He served as Treasurer of his fraternity, Alpha Tau Omega, and graduated with his Bachelor’s in Business Administration in 1983. Tom was briefly married to Tamara Sue French and they had one son, Spencer.
Tom began his career in Dallas as a commercial real estate appraiser. However, he decided to become a stockbroker and worked with his father, Frank, and brother, Chuck at Merrill Lynch. Tom later decided to follow his true passion of working with children and taught math at Faith Family Academy in Oak Cliff, Texas. He shared his enthusiasm and intellect with the hearts and minds of his many students who remember him. One of his favorite quotes by Larry Martinek was “Children don’t hate math. What they hate is being confused, intimidated, and embarrassed by math. With understanding comes passion, and with passion comes growth – a treasure is unlocked”.
Tom’s love and devotion to his family always came first in his life. He is survived by his son, Spencer. He pre-deceased his mother, Barbara Coronado, his sister, Katey, and his younger brother, Chuck. Visitation is Wednesday, April 29, 2020 from 1-2pm at Restland Funeral Home and Cemetery’s Memorial Chapel followed by his funeral service at 2pm. His burial will be private for family at Restland Cemetery.
