Thomas Alexander "Tom" Hutson Jr.'s Obituary
Thomas Alexander “Tom” Hutson Jr., age 89, of Dallas, Texas died on January 26, 2018 after a long illness.Thomas was born in Dallas, Texas on October 6, 1928 to Thomas A. Hutson and Ethel Pearl Fulcher Hutson. He attended John Henry Brown elementary school and graduated from Old Forest Avenue High School in 1947.After graduation from high school he worked for the Texas and Pacific Railroad then voluntarily enlisted in the United States Regular Army in July of 1948. Upon completing basic training at Fort Ord, California, Thomas requested overseas assignment. He was subsequently assigned to Company E. Second Battalion Eighteenth Infantry Regiment, First US Infantry Division: The Famous Big Red One. Thomas served in the village of Kafertal, just outside Mannheim, Germany. He served three years in this infantry rifle company throughout the occupation. He returned to the United States in June of 1951, at which time his enlistment was extended for one year due to the Korean War. Thomas was promoted to Staff Sergeant and assigned to Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas as a Tactical Infantry Instructor. During this duty period he trained combat replacement soldiers for the Korean War. In December of 1951 he was transferred to MRTC Camp Pickett, Virginia where continued to serve as a Tactical Infantry Instructor. He was honorably discharged as Staff Sergeant U.S. Regular Army in July of 1952. After returning to Dallas, Thomas again worked for the Texas and Pacific Railroad. He was also part owner in a Texaco Service station.On February 5, 1955 Thomas joined the Dallas Police Department. On November 22, 1963 Thomas was involved in the apprehension of the assassin of President John F. Kennedy as detailed in his Warren Commission Testimony. He was promoted through the ranks to Assistant Chief of Police and retired July 15, 1985. Thomas was recalled by the City of Dallas in 1986 to reorganize the Dallas Security Force. His final retirement was October 1986 after 32 years of honorable service. Thomas was Past Commander and life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6796 Dallas, Texas. He was also a Blue Lodge Mason, Scottish Rite 32 Degree Mason, Hella Temple Shrine.Thomas is survived by his wife of over fifty years, Barbara; sister Marvel; daughter Evelyn; son Brent; eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father Thomas, mother Pearl and oldest son Thomas.In lieu of flowers, Thomas requested donations be made to:Society of the First Infantry Division (BRO Fund) in memory of Thomas A. Hutson and the soldiers he served with. PO Box 2307 Ft. Riley, KS 66442.Visitation will be Wednesday January 31, 2018 6-8PM at Restland Funeral Home in Dallas, Texas. Funeral services at Restland Memorial Chapel on Thursday February 1, 2018 2:30PM with interment to follow.The family would like to convey gratitude to the outstanding care offered to Thomas by the entire C.C.
