Tom J. Smith Jr. (82), a loyal, dedicated, and hard-working father, was born on November 2, 1943, in Nacogdoches, Texas, to Tom Smith Sr. and Barbra (McGowen) Smith. He gave his life to Christ at an early age and demonstrated his faith through service to others. He passed away peacefully at his home in Dallas, Texas, on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, after a brave fight against pancreatic cancer. Known for his quick wit, valuable advice, and abundant knowledge, Tom had a rare ability to lift spirits and guide others, even in difficult times. He lived his life with resilience, humor, and an unwavering commitment to those he loved.
A proud Vietnam War veteran, Tom served his country with honor as a helicopter pilot and continued that service in the Army Reserves for over 25 years, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. In recognition of his bravery and exemplary service, he was awarded the Bronze Star, the Army Air Medal, and the Meritorious Service Medal. While serving in the Army Reserves, he also devoted his life to public service as a civil rights investigator for the Department of Health and Human Services, tirelessly working to expose and correct the mistreatment of people with disabilities and other underrepresented groups. His work left a lasting impact on many lives.
Tom was a proud alumnus of E.J. Campbell High School and Texas Southern University, and he went on to earn master’s degrees from Wayne State University and Prairie View A&M University. He remained an active and dedicated participant in his High School and College alumni throughout his life. He was also a devoted member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., and proudly served as a treasurer for the NAACP for over 20 years. His involvement reflected who he was at his core. A man deeply committed to service, brotherhood, and social justice. Tom’s strong Christian beliefs were the foundation for his approach to the challenges and joys in life. His faith allowed him to weather any storm. He was an active member and usher at Saintsville Church of God in Christ, and most recently regularly attended New Mount Zion Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Janie M. Smith; his older brother, Spuggen Smith; and his older sister, Janice (Smith) Sparks.
