Velma Zoe Ashwander's Obituary
Velma Zoe Ashwander, a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and great grandmother passed away at the age of 82 in Sachse, Texas on Wednesday, October 7, 2020. She is now with her Lord and Savior. Visitation: 2-4pm Saturday, October 17, 2020 at the funeral home. Funeral: 2:00pm Monday, October 19, 2020 at Restland Memorial Chapel Interment: Restland Cemetery Velma was born on December 27, 1937 in Tipton, Oklahoma to James and Pauline Shults. She was a young child when her father returned home from World War II, and shortly thereafter, her parents relocated the family to Dallas Texas, soon settling in Garland in 1946. Velma excelled academically during her school years and would eventually find herself playing the clarinet for the Garland High School Band (Home of the Owls), where she met and fell in love with her future husband, Nelson (Ronnie Ashwander), who played the trombone. They married in 1955 and would soon begin their journey in life. Their marriage was blessed with five children (four sons and one daughter). Velma was proud of her family; she worked tirelessly to assist in rearing her children and ensuring her young family attended church services on Sunday. Velma began her career as an Accounting/Office Manager when her children were young, and she continued this career up to her retirement in 2000. She remained a loving and devoted wife to her husband, Nelson (Ronnie) as they laid down roots in what used to be the small town of Garland, Texas. Velma enjoyed cooking, teaching Sunday school class, gardening, camping adventures, sporting events, playing bridge with her friends,and working crossword puzzles. She loved to watch her family have a good time and would not hesitate to join in the tears of laughter. Velma cherished her grandchildren and great grandchildren. The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to Oxford Glen Memory Care and Bristol Hospice for their love and care of Velma. Velma is preceded in death by her father, James Shults, and her mother, Pauline Shults. Velma is survived by her husband, Nelson (Ronnie) Ashwander; her children Michael and wife Nora, David, Steven, Rhonda, Alan and wife Kathy; her brother Robert Shults; her 11 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
